AZ: Homeschoolers not well received at state capital

On Monday more than 500 supporters of home schooling gathered at the State Capitol for Arizona Home Education Week, a decade-long tradition organized by Arizona Families for Home Education (www.afhe.org) that has been officially recognized each year by a gubernatorial proclamation. That is, until this year.

After giving the event's sponsors the runaround for several weeks, a policy advisor to new Gov. Janet Napolitano called to tell AFHE that its request for a proclamation had been rejected because of concerns over the impact of home education on "shareholders."

Earlier, when AFHE tried to get the legislature to approve a proclamation, House Democrats balked, with one saying openly that he had real concerns about parents educating their children!

These are ominous developments for the home schooling community, which consistently has produced superior academic results among its students while saving precious taxpayer money and reducing our state budget.

We will be watching for any efforts to weaken Arizona's home schooling laws, but home educators need to be alert and active politically to preserve their hard-won freedoms.

I doubt it. 'Real concerns' about homeschooling parents 'depriving' the school districts of ADA money....'real concerns' that the politically correct indoctrination in the government schools' classrooms will not be forced upon homeschooling students.....'real concerns' that homeschooling students quite possibly will grow up NOT being government-worshipping statists....all these things I'd believe.

But 'real concerns' about parents educating their own? Right.

Pretty strange considering that the Republicans have a wide majority. I think that Janet knows that she will never get any further restrictions on homeschoolers as long as the Republicans have a solid majority. However, watch out for Tom Horne, Supt. of Public Instruction who FAVORS more control over homeschoolers.

According the 'RATS, homeschooling has a negative impact on the shareholders of public education. Looks like liberals are going to try to blame homeschoolers for budget deficits.

As long as home schoolers could be marginalized and denounced as kooks, the left didn't care. Now that significant numbers of parents have proven that homeschooling is far superior to pubic ejukashun, and that more and more people are demanding to be able to spend their own tax money on the school they want, the left is going from benevolent big brother to dictatorial tyrant.

Never ever pick a fight with people who can make defeating you an educational project and get credit for it. Who have all day to do it, everyday, and who are passionate about their rights.

There are a few grassroots groups that politicians should never touch... homeschooling is one! Rep Mills in Maine was burned a few years ago when he tried to pick up some brownie points with the educrats by introducing bills to limit homeschooling here. He thought it would just scoot through. In his wildest dreams he did not imagine the crowd that showed up.
