Congratulations to Norah!
I hope she has staying power, but personally, I got a little tired of her album a few months ago. I think I heard too much of it on the radio (WXPN in Philly), but her take on Hank Williams' 'Cold, Cold Heart' is still my favorite selection and I never got tired of that one.

My vote for album of the year would be Beth Orton's 'Daybreaker', hands down. But then, I don't get to vote.

I got to meet Beth Orton a few years back. She had a "Sonic Session" with Philly station Y-100, just after her album "Central Reservation" came out. My sister, myself, and about 50 other people got an intimate performance with her and her band. I got her to sign the liner notes to my copy. She was good.

I love Diana Krall! To date Diana has the best voice yet ;)

I'm another Krall fan - have all of her CD's - what a talent. I place Nora in her class too. Beautiful voice and talent. I heard her CD being played in Borders and bought it immediately. I think she'll be around for a long time. She appears to be like Krall, lots of talent and a love for music. She may not be like the flashy hits who disappear quickly - but I think she'll last. Talent usually outlasts flash and hype.

What are the rules on eligibility? Pearl Jam's Riot Act came out in November, 2002. Does that means it can be nominated next year?

I am not a young conservative but I am glad to see an artist of the quality of Nora win. I accidentally listened to her bits of her song online one time and am a fan. Such a contrast to bubble gum rock.

Awards well deserved

Never heard her music, but first heard of her because her guitar player's dad is Jeff Levy, computer talk show host of LA radio station KFI. Long ago he was playing bump music by his son, then later said that his son worked with Norah Jones, someone you'd be hearing from. He was right!

I'm pretty sure she didn't win anything, not for that awful song which only hit #1 out of curiosity. How else did it go gold in its first week when singles NEVER go gold nowadays. Most singles aren't even released for reatail anymore, ever since Billboard began to accept radio only singles four years ago. It also jumped 51 spots in one week, yet only held the top spot for three. It hit #1 because people were curious since she had just won American Idol.

The cut off date is September 30 or October 1, I can't remember which. So yes, they'll be eligible next year. And does anyone know if the Dixie Chick's version of Landslide came out before that time? Whatever. They'll be sure to get consideration for Travelin' Soldier. What a great song that one is.

And the difference between a Pop Vocal Album and a Record of the Year and an Album of the Year is what again?

I guess it's just a difference of opinion. I find nothing wrong with the picture.

Her talent shouldn't come as much of a suprise: her father is Ravi Shankar, not known for being a musical slouch himself.

Doesn't anyone have a problem with her receiving 8 awards? 8? For one song? Granted, the whole album may be good, but 8 awards, rather than have others get their due.

This is one of the reasons I NEVER watch this trash. Award shows sicken me - the Acadamy awards, and the grammys. What other industry do you have people who work in it giving each other awards for the work they do. It's not sufficient to receive millions of dollars for their efforts, they have to have a national audience where they give each other awards for this!...

Sorry folks, but I find this a sickening display of narcissism.

Plus, they're all a bunch of libs anyway. Another reason to stay away...

I realize that. You're right - there's no accounting for taste, and taste is a matter of opinion. Just throwing my 2 cents in. Judging by everyone else's comments, I guess I'm way off. You can't all feel she's gorgeous and be wrong about it. I'm still not impressed nonetheless.
