The Copper Scroll Project: In Search of the Ark of the Covenant
The New American ^ | 3/8/18 | William F Jasper

Posted on 03/12/2018 4:16:23 PM PDT by Roman_War_Criminal

Readers of the Old Testament are familiar with the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred golden chest carried by the Israelites during their wanderings in the desert and finally placed in the temple built by King Solomon. The 1981 adventure/fantasy film Raiders of the Lost Ark by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas introduced a Hollywood version of the Ark to a much larger global audience outside the Jewish and Christian traditions. That movie ends with the Ark disappearing in a large crate, along with thousands of other similar crates, into a huge U.S. government warehouse.

The Ark did indeed disappear, but not following World War II, as Hollywood portrayed, and not into a top-secret warehouse. There is much dispute among scholars and researchers about when, and by whom, it was removed from the Temple. Some believe it was taken to Babylon, following the Jewish-Babylonian War, which culminated in 586 B.C. with Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II plundering and destroying Jerusalem, slaying most of the Israelites, and taking most of the survivors into captivity. Others hold that the Ark is in Aksum, Ethiopia, or that it is buried in a tunnel under the Temple, or that it is in a cave beneath Golgotha (also known as Calvary), the hill on which Jesus Christ was crucified. At any rate, it has been “missing” for well over two millennia, its location known only to God.

The Ark was never in the Second Temple that Titus destroyed.

So how do we know that is the case?

How did it get there? Did Jesus take it with Him?

The ark in Rev 11:19 refers to the heavenly reality of the earthly physical Ark of the Covenant the Lord instructed the Israelites to build. We know from Hebrews the temple and all of its contents, including the Ark of the Covenant, were shadows of heavenly things, constructed according to the precise pattern God gave Moses.

I think Ezekiel described the event ... in the wheel within a wheel event.

The Ark was never in the 2nd Temple, which is the one that Pompey would have seen. It is last mentioned circa 620 BC when King Josiah orders the Levites to return it to the Temple, but there is no mention of where the Levites had taken it or if they ever returned it. Then it disappears from history.

So how do we know that is the case?

Some Jews — the Essenes — spun off after the first temple was destroyed. One of the reasons was because they disagreed with making sacrifices at the temple where there was no Ark.

I guess the findings of Ron Wyatt have still not reached their appointed time. Remember that name, look him up.

It would seem the author knows nothing about the Copper Scroll. That scroll outlines various locations of what today would comprise an immense - and rather detailed - treasure. . . The Ark of the Covenant is not mentioned. If someone could decipher just enough of the locations to obtain a quarter of the listed bounty - at today’s prices - they might well forget all about the Ark of the Covenant!

It looks like Barfield picked up Vendyl Jones work, who excavated seven times at Qumran, starting in 1978, using the Copper Scroll, and looking for the Ashes of the Red Heifer” (Numbers 19). Barfield certainly must have been aware of Vendyl’s work. Vendyl’s Archaologist was Pesach bar Adon, and later Daniel Patrick, both from the Dept. Of Antiqiuties. Anyone who is interested can see the work at the Department. Vendyl passed away about 10 years ago, so it is good if someone can extend it.

No one has found anything of significance using the Copper Scroll. I know - I spent 10 years of my life looking for the objects, using the Copper Scroll, at Qumran, and nothing of significance has been found that were related to the scroll. Many have tried. Barfield is the latest (I guess.) I wish him success.

Thanks. Great info in that link. Enjoyed the read.

That’s what I thought I had remembered but was getting confused by the comments in the thread. The Temple was destroyed and Jerusalem was razed to the ground but it is not clear what happened to the Ark.

One thing we do know is that only special Priests were even able to touch and move the Ark without dying.

Your information about the Essenes is not correct. That sect started up after the Maccabean overthrow of the Seleucid rule in Jerusalem. There is no evidence of the existence of the Ark after the Babylonian conquest about 570 BCE. The Seleucids were overthrown about 170 BCE.

The Maccabees did not reestablish the old order of priesthood, which gave rise to the Teacher of Righteousness and the Essenes. While generally believed to be centered on Qumran, the sect had followers all around Judea. Authorship of the Dead Sea Scrolls is not universally accepted to have been the Essenes alone - although it seems to me any other alternative is similar to shovelling smoke...

There was an Essene Gate built by Herod in the SE corner wall of Jerusalem.

To find the locations mentioned in the Copper Scroll one would need a Wayback machine; I can’t imagine taking on such frustration - but, heh! That is what makes the world go ‘round.

I should add that I admire your adventurous nature, although I cannot see myself using the Copper Scroll as a launching pad for a ten year adventure... Must have been a magnificent obsession, though.

Fair enough. I actually listened to the video in this thread last night:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3638999/posts

Go to 38:30 mark where he briefly discusses the Essenes. He clearly agrees with your timeline but the reasons for the sect breaking away are not far from what I posted. There’s not a lot of information on the Essenes and I certainly wouldn’t be an expert.

I’ll add that I had never heard of the person in the video before and I didn’t particularly care for the presentation. I would like your opinion on his comments.
