U.S. Archbishop: Using Contraception is Always ‘Evil’
LifeSite News ^ | 6/5/18 | Lisa Bourne

Posted on 06/10/2018 6:42:31 PM PDT by marshmallow

June 5, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Using contraception is an “intrinsic evil” in all circumstances because it “cuts off one of the goals of marriage which is an openness to life,” Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann told LifeSiteNews.

Any question on this issue lies on the level of moral culpability for those who do use it, he added.

“Circumstances can affect the culpability, [but] it doesn't affect the rightness or wrongness of the act,” he said.

Speaking exclusively with LifeSiteNews, the incoming chair for the U.S. Bishops’ pro-life committee said further that following the Church’s teaching on contraception is an attainable goal, and that people simply need good confessors to help them understand that fact.

“Good confessors can help and guide people through this, and, I think, help every individual realize that the moral good the moral law is attainable for all of us.”

LifeSiteNews Editor-in-chief and co-founder John-Henry Westen had asked Archbishop Naumann in the context of this year’s 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae whether it was, in fact, the case — as some bishops suggesting at the time of the document’s release — that Catholic couples may still use contraception if they feel in conscience that they were justified, and if not, whether this would make them ineligible then to receive Holy Communion.

Archbishop Naumann confirmed the Church’s teaching on contraception as a moral evil, as well as Church teaching that each and every conjugal act must be open to life.

“I think objectively contraception, and we see this in the Catechism, it is clear about that, that there is an intrinsic evil to use it,” the archbishop said, “because it cuts off one of the goals of marriage, which is an openness to life.”

" Their prayer lives are not the reason they are doing the NFP."

"You seem to be missing the point in a big way."

You, first of all, don't know whether their prayers lives are the reason they are doing the NFP. Their prayer life may be centrally involved in the process and the motivation--- and usually is, at least as far as I can see.

Second, the impulse to attribute non-prayerful, non-God-pleasing reasons for NFP, even among the most ardent of believers --- who are the very ones most likely to opt for NFP --- shows a most unattractive reflex to assume the worst of others, rather than be best.

Third, all the NFP literature I have seen (from the Christian, rather than the health/selfcare/medical sources) emphasizes the importance of prayer and utter reliance on God.

You are very much mistaken about these people. Please, dear metmom, consider this in your heart.

A free will directred toward contraception is in conflict with Gopd’s Will, as expressed both is Biblical teaching and in Natural Law.

If you folks REALLY believed GOD wanted sex for procreation; you'd 'abstain' for 3 weeks instead of ONE!!

In direct defiance of what Paul wrote; Rome’s ‘Mary’ is described as PERMANENTLY abstaining; while her husband is permanently deprived; even of NFP.

There was a thread some time back about a Catholic couple, who agreed to live in a platonic, sexless marriage, and they were championed for it.

There is a cult (maybe that word is a bit strong) that embraces the idea of a Jewish couple. One that lived in a platonic, sexless marriage; claiming that is such a holy and ideal state to be in.

Neither did Jesus or St. Paul, both of whom were, like Naumann, celibate.

And you KNOW this about Paul; HOW?

So God doesn’t really want us to procreate? Is that what you’re saying? He just wants us to hump like animals cuz it’s fun? Geez - who knew?

It is a simple concept. I don’t see why you fail to comprehend it unless it’s deliberate. Every sexual act must be open to new life.

Cause you all sure seem to treat it as if it's a virtue of some kind, just like sex is bad or something.

It MUST be; or else what LOGICAL (or biblical) reason would the Catholic Church INSIST that M&J NEVER had sexual relations?

The abstinence method never intentionally impairs the fertility of a sexual act, as contraception does. And therein lies the problem with the drug-devices-surgery methods: the directly deliberate disabling of the "gift of self" which is marital union.

Ethically, any directly intended disabling of a bodily organ or system --- whether an eye, an ear, a leg, the reproductive system --- is morally objectionable.

When I say "directly intended," that means "not as a therapeutic measure." For instance, removal of a cancerous uterus. When I say "disabling," that means blocking normal function, whether temporarily or permanently.

It's particularly unethical with regards to the reproductive system, since (1) sex is sacred, meaning at least that you don't target parts of it to split off and reject, and (2) the cumulative results of a whole society accepting the premises (rejection of natural sex and fertility) is destroying a understanding of natural gender and sexual identity, destroying natural marriage as an institution, shrinking and weakening families, nations, and civilizations.

Note what contraception (as a mentality and as a technique) has "accomplished" in 50 years. It's the gateway of the "Culture of Death."

Think I'm kidding? Look around you.

Probably the same way you know that Mary did not remain a virgin.

What do you mean by the little blue pill?
is it something to take when you’re ill??
When your head has an ache,
It’s an aspirin you take.
That’s the cure when you’re needing a thrill.

Does no good; as I can’t read Hebrew.

I can; however; read the ENGLISH translation of Hebrew words on that web page.

Is that any better than English words found in various translations of whole bible sources?

"I guess if two married people aren’t humping every second of every day to make more Catholic babies that’s evil too."

Code Toad, I like you and I usually find your comments are sensible, or at least plausible.

Really, I do.

However, that was so ... misinformed. But open-minded as you are, I am confident you are open to better information.

(1) Nobody has ever said, ever, that Catholic married couples have to have as many babies as they are physically able to have. Never.

(2) As for "birth control", a limited periodic abstinence (approx 1 week of every month), mutually agreed, is the only method which is
