He concludes his commentary with the words: The question that remains to be answered is, to put it briefly: whether a schism is already at hand. And who initiated this schism?
It is not to be excluded that I will enter history as the one who split the Catholic Church. Jorge the Humble

If by “Protestant”, the intended party of that designation is part of what is known elsewhere as the Lutheran church, the liturgy of the Lutheran church in its original format was but a translation of the Latin text of the service into the language of the vernacular, it this instance German.
The Lutherans regard the Pope to be a superior bishop, still a man, elected to that position by a panel of his peers. You need not be Christian to become a bishop, but sometimes you have to be one terrific politician.

Theoretically it is possible that a Muslim or Jew could become Pope. But like I mentioned, it would take one pretty powerful and gifted political campaign mamager.
Just like you do not have to be an elected member of the House of Representatives to become Speaker of the House. But again, the politics would be pretty uphill.

An interesting issue I have seen discussed is that Germany collects a tax in support of state recognized churches. If a Lutheran is able to be listed as a communicant member of the Catholic Parish due to changes in the ability to receive the Eucharist, the Parish gets the tax stipend from the state for the year for that person.
Many members give little in collection because they are taxed on behalf of the church.
The argument associated with this is that the German parishes are on a money grabbing scheme for enrolled members.

Would Jesus break bread with lowly Samaritans and Protestants? Or have communion with them?

The German Churches are becoming totally secular over there. The Lutheran Church is in the process of renaming their Churches. The famous Cathedral of Martin Luther, St. Mary’s, has been renamed generically as “City Church”.

The reality is that there was no Catholic,Orthodox,or Protestant ⛪ Church at the time of the last supper. The Church did not come to life until in the upper room at the first Pentecost. The last supper was a Jewish Seder.

#9:
"Would Jesus break bread with lowly Samaritans and Protestants? Or have communion with them?" Jesus associating with the riff-raff? Oh, dahling, such things just aren't done! Share his cup with one of them? Oh, heavens to Betsy, no! Who knows what germs they might be carrying …
