About 1000 years ago, paganism was practically stamped out in Iceland, while Christianity was ushered in. But Nordic neopaganism, under the name of Ásatrúarfélagið (sometimes called Asatru), has now become the fastest growing belief system in the country. And after years in the making, the believers of this faith are on the brink of worshipping in their first temple.
Business Insider Nordic reports the statistics on just how fast Ásatrúarfélagið has grown, From 570 members in 2002, the association of the faith of the Æsir Ásatrúarfélagið now numbers 3900 Icelanders, making it the largest non-Christian religion in the country.
The Ásatrúarfélagiðs first temple, built to honor Odin and Thor, is expected to be ready by the end of 2018. The temple was originally set to be built in 2016, but technical problems have delayed construction work. It is designed by Icelandic architect and Ásatrúarfélagið member Magnús Jensson and will be in Reykjavik.

IIRC, the reason the handle is too short is because of Loki. When the hammer was being forged, Loki tried three times to screw it up. The final time, during the forging of the handle, Loki turned himself into a fly, and got in the eye of the person working the bellows. Because of this, they didn't have enough material to make the handle as big as they wanted it to be. But that's only IIRC.
"Blasphemy is an artistic effect, because blasphemy depends upon a philosophical conviction. Blasphemy depends upon belief and is fading with it. If any one doubts this, let him sit down seriously and try to think blasphemous thoughts about Thor. I think his family will find him at the end of the day in a state of some exhaustion."
Because it's obviously not working any longer, that's why.
As my friend would say, “Why worship a dead Jew that’s been dead for 2000 years”? It’s not working. Get over it.
Good catch. Happy Woden’sday
Don`t forget The Beautiful Goddess Frigga from who came our second most favorite cuss word.
whom
Perhaps they can blood sacrifice the immigrants, as a hint for them to leave.
The temples will be decided on Wednesday and Thursday.
I wrote “dedicated”, but it doesn’t matter, because someone beat me to the punch.
Quote-(Hey, weve already got two days of the week named for them, (Wednesday and Thursday), so why not have a monument for them?)
Great point.
They don’t have restaurants like Tiw or Frigg yet do they in Iceland like in America, even other parts of the west?
It would be interesting to see if the apostles Paul or any of the apostles would consider those restaurants a temple where one would eat food sacrificed to idols like god Tiw or goddess Frigg.
Ruby tiwsday and TGiFrigg days may be perfect examples of a modern monument to a god and goddess.
It is written that there is nothing new under the sun :)
This one's from 2018. So, what's the over and under on the volcano destroying Iceland?
What, Iceland doesn’t have a virgin they can toss in?
It’s Friggin awful.
I’ve always heard lutefisk is bad, but I’ve never had the pleasure of eating it.
That was my 1st thought-cosplay-Iceland style-people with too much time on their hands building a fort-a gag worthy ugly fort-to play make believe in...
With Lutheranism securely in place, Catholicism was outlawed, and all Catholic church property was seized by Iceland's secular rulers. The lands belonging to the Icelandic churches fell into the hands of the King of Denmark, and the commercial influence of Danes and the Danish crown in Iceland greatly increased, culminating in the Danish-Icelandic Trade Monopoly enacted in 1602 and abolished in 1854.
Now 4% of Icelanders are Catholics and 1.5% are Astru (Nordic gods)
I doubt that “the Norse religion existed already in 500 BC, and probably goes back another 1,000 years prior to that”
The Norse religion is the specific Germanic version of the standard Indo-European religion with some flavours like hell being of Ice, like Ragnarok etc. There isn’t evidence of this as far back as 500 BC
What I find fascinating is how the Indo-European pantheon evolved.
The most primitive gods - that of the Wind, the Sun and fire are common to all the branches of I-E
In Hinduism these are Varuna, Surya and Agni. In the pre-Zoroastrian Irani religion these are Varna, Surya and Agni. In the Slavic religion these are Wiatr, Slonce and Ogien. Similar gods we find in Italic, Greek and Germanic religions.
The hittite gods seem to be these same
But the change seems to be around 200 BC for India, 300 BC for greater Iran and later for the others
In greater India the IE gods get merged with the Dravidian gods and the Vedas are downgraded and we get the Trimurti (Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma). In Iran we get the prophet Zoroaster who raises Agni to Ahura Mazda.
In India the original two families of gods - the Asura and the Devas fight and the Devas win, while Asura are relegated to demons. In Iran the Ahura and Daevas fight and the Ahura win while the Daevas are reduced to gods of the hearth.
In the Germanic regions these are the Aesir and the Vanir
In the Greek and Italic we have the original 2 god-families separated into Titans and Olympians - though this seems to be more the influence of Sumerian and perhaps Semitic religious pantheons.
“the whole place go to the mohammedans”??? Mohammedans are only 0.31% of the Icelandic population.
