Why Modern Men Look Elsewhere For Spiritual Wisdom
Word on Fire Ministry ^ | 6.19.23 | Bishop Robert Barron

Posted on 06/23/2023 7:15:28 PM PDT by MurphsLaw

Interesting discussion on why today's men
have found a niche for seeking out answers
to the questions needing answers they seek.
In that, the popularity of the likes of Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson
are explained in the article that is discussed.
This is not to detract from or demean these Modern day self-help gurus-
but shed some light on why this new "spiritual" vibe has taken center stage in secular culture.

Ends around the 30 min. Mark.)

Why Modern Men Look Elsewhere For Spiritual Wisdom

A philosophical view of how we seek wisdom today,
and how the Church has lost it's role as a source of wisdom that should always be challenging us.

From Aristotle, the Stoics and the place of virtue in our life,
This q & a gives a reason to examine our own spiritual guidance.

In a nutshell, when society is obedient to God, you make life easier for each subsequent generation until it is almost paradise.

However, with life getting better, we become self-sufficient. When we become self sufficent, we become arrogant and wanting to go our way. That’s when we become the society that we are now.

It is also our doom.

He damns with faint praise.

Peterson's extended lecture series on Genesis and Exodus using a psychological and neuro-science interpretation is more studied, relevant and faith-forming than anything I have ever heard coming from 21st century Catholic Priest of Christian preacher.

Because they’re sinners?

Their natural state before God saves their souls?

Isn’t Peterson an atheist though? I’ve noticed he is very careful in his words to not imply that he believes the Bible is actually true, only that Western culture is built on the idea.

I know Rogan is godless. I can’t say I’m a fan of either of them because they seem to be like Oprah but for men.

Yes that caveat was for you.
I don't think Petersen is given "faint praise" here though.
To the contrary, this Bishop does admire him alot- and mentions JP often.
(For which he draws more angst from the Traditional folks in the Church.)

Their discussion between them on contemporary existentialism juxtaposing Christianity
was as relevant as any I have listened to as well.

From the Christian perspective however, after all the discussion,
We need a Savior
We cannot save ourselves from worldly sin.
These popular speakers attracting followers has a real potential for personal collapse if the reliance is on self-help is the means to achieve a greater good.
AA's 12 step program was a good analogy for a required higher power in our lives.
So I didn't see it as much as damning,
as I do see these modern day guru's as potentially
ineffective in getting the followers to their final goal.

Peterson’s daughter is apparently a Christian. She might be a good influence on him. We should pray for him.

I think the proof is in the pudding. We are being disobedient, because there is no reason to be obedient.

M-

Did you watch Jordan Peterson’s recent interview of BB during Peterson’s podcast.

As One Guy sits here, he can’t remember exactly which essential aspect of ancient and immovable Catholic doctrine that Barron whiffed on while being interviewed by Peterson. But he does remember howling like an injured wolf when it happened.

Your guy has a nasty habit of unnecessarily giving up acres of hallowed ground when he has the chance to speak on the record with certain people who, like Peterson and Shapiro have been doing, are “trending” in North American culture.

Jordan Peterson is a bipolar tradcon cuck. Hes wound up making himself nuts. And tearing up/crying to make a point in a discussion isn’t how men or women make points and convince people of what they are saying.

It’s a Kobayashi Maru. In order to succeed, you must be self sufficient which causes lack of recognition to God which supposedly causes a fall from God.

My reply was based more on the premise of “when society is obedient to God, you make life easier for each subsequent generation until it is almost paradise”. For that, we have no evidence or proof.

No. He is not an atheist. He is asking the right questions, and doesn't seem afraid to where the answers lead. His wife is a rosary-praying Christian. His approach reminds me a bit of the humanist-left Christians in the 1960s, only he is trying to pull of the same approach to justify non-relativistic moral standards, which is now regarded as quite right wing. His professional and academic commitment to evolutionary biology as a central characteristic to his world-view and scientific view warps his prioritizations and presuppositions, in my opinion.

If you have been listening to him for years, he is moving in the right direction, and at least once when he was challenged to embrace Catholicism, he wasn't offended, and suggested that that may come. He seems to have sympathies with the Orthodox as well.

I noticed in YouTube videos re:Peterson that the thumbnail has him tearing up or crying. I haven’t seen him do this and wondered why they portray him that way.
