MERKEL'S PACT WITH AMERICA: Germany Rediscovers the US as a Partner
SPIEGEL Online ^ | April 30, 2007 | Ralf Beste, Jan Fleischhauer, Georg Mascolo, Christian Reiermann, Matthias Schepp, Gabor Steingart

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reoriented Germany away from Russia and toward the United States. Expanded economic ties are just one area of renewed cooperation. But could Germany get burned like the British did?

The gift brought by a guest says a lot about his or her intentions. The love-sick romantic shows up with a dozen red roses. A box of Cohiba cigars is the classic gift between men in the West. Purebred horses and trained falcons, on the other hand, are the gift of choice among men in the Arab world. When German chancellors travel, their hosts usually receive the best Meissen porcelain, Junghans clocks or cases of Riesling wine.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel will present an especially generous gift during her trip to the United States this week. At a Monday ceremony in the Great Hall of the US Library of Congress, she will hand over to the Americans something Germans would normally be barred from even taking out of the country: a piece of Germany's national cultural heritage.

The item in question is a world map drafted by Freiburg native Martin Waldseemüller in 1507. It is a map which shows a rough outline of the new continent, and for the first time uses a name that the immigrants in the New World would eventually adopt for their own: America.

"Many of you have in your veins German and Italian blood. But remember that these ancestors of yours so loved freedom that they gave up home and country to cross the ocean in search of liberty. The ancestors of the people we shall kill lacked the courage to make such a sacrifice and remained slaves." -- George S. Patton

"We are going to kill German b*stards. I would prefer to skin them alive, but gentlemen, I fear some of our people at home would accuse me of being too rough." -- George S. Patton

LOL! What mouth on the good general. I love him, and how I wish we had a few more of him around today.

Patton and WW2 have been dead for 62 years. We could use him again in iraq.

Patton was unique... but if there is someone today comparable to him it would be Marine Lieutenant General James N. Mattis.
He looks like Patton, behaves like Patton and speaks like Patton.

If we were the imperialists that the German left think we are, we’d own them.

Very true, being one of both German and Italian ancestry - my dad and my uncles all fought on the American side.

Apparently, Harrison Ford is playing him in a upcoming movie, according to that link.

Ooh Merkel is giving them an old map that’s already been here since 2001 - BFD. They can hove the map up their collective BLEEPS!

If Sarkozy is elected he will also reestablish good relations with the USA.

History is cruel: Why weren’t Sarkozy and Merkel President and Chancellor already five years ago? They would have likely been part of the coalition of the willing, contrary to Schroeder and Chirac.

And now when Germany and France have elected conservatives (relatively), the USA elects defeatist democraps.

One thing I just cannot stand is the mind of the lefist and their hateful ideology. Its clear in this article; one has to be either for the US and against Russia, or against Russia and for the US. One thing that Britian knows is that business is good when you trade with as many good partners as you can. So why should Germany limit their business? In the mind of the leftist, one should in order to just spite the US, like Schroder.

I am so glad I lost that bet to you.

Of course I have high regards of General Patton, but it was rather Marshal Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov from the Red Army who made us Germans loose the last world war.

In Germany we still use a funny term for someone who has a easy job: "Kamerad von der Westfront" (comrade from the western front). America was and is impressive to us in many ways, but for sure not because of its fighting traditions. Guess what - you should be proud of that.

Go talk to the Japs about that - they may have a different opinion...

You can probably thank American “fighting tradition” that Germany even exists today.

Cheers.
