OLDEST KNOWN GOSPEL RETRIEVED FROM MUMMY MASK, RESEARCHERS CLAIM
Breitbart/UPI ^ | Jan 21, 2015 | staff

The mummy masks of ancient commoners are a treasure trove of classical and religious documents — Christian scripture, Phoenician histories, Greek poetry.

While the rich and royal members of ancient Egyptian society were buried in mummy masks of flaked gold and other precious metals, common people were forced to construct theirs with recycled pieces of paper. Recently, archaeologists found what they believe to be the world’s oldest piece of scripture in the mask of mummy from the first century.

Researchers say the new scrap of spiritual papyrus is a portion of the the Gospel of Mark, the second chapter of the New Testament. The gospel scroll fragment dates to approximately 90 AD. Scientists were able to zero in on the paper’s age by analyzing handwriting, comparing it to the other texts found in the mask, and (most convincingly) via carbon dating.

The Gospel of Mark isn’t a “chapter”. It’s an entire book of the Bible.

FWIW, the double "the" is there in the original. And whoever wrote this at Breitbart must be unfamiliar with Mark's gospel, to pass it off as a mere "chapter".

Maybe the author meant to say the second book of the New Testament.

I’ve asked for several corrections on Breitbart’s Big Hollywood and Big Government sites before. I usually chalk up most errors there and on other sites to rushing to meet publication deadlines. Sloppy? Yes. Acceptable? No. But almost understandable given today’s journalism standards.

If memory serves, Mark’s Gospel is the oldest and was referenced by at least one of the other three Gospel writers (all under the direct guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.)

If this is an accurate report (they really did discover an early Gos. of Mark) then Superduper!

two caveats:

1. a serious caution: we’re always very suspicious when people ‘had to sign confidentiality oaths’ — this makes it sound like some sort of profiteering scam rather than genuine academic research
and
2. and a somewhat less serious aside: if it contains an original copy of Morton Smith’s Secret Gospel of Mark, all Hell will break loose....

Some mummies were stuffed with books! An unknown Greek play was found —in part—stuffed in a mummy. What other Lost Books remain to be found? Maybe the lost books of Plato? The Gospel of Pilat? The history of Alexander by Ptolemy?

Doubt that it ever will. Those two fragments, whether forgeries or not, do not agree with Scripture in toto. Namely, the fragments promote the notion of homosexuality being practiced and contrary to Scripture.

The timing of these fragments in the 1970s fits right in with the communist manifesto’s points.

>>The debate over the masks and documents they reveal remains very much shrouded in secrecy, as scientists working on this particular project were forced to sign confidentiality agreements.

This is not science. This is a cult.

We have all the books we need in order to believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

(Personally, I expect discoveries (or a single discovery) in the coming days that will completely “negate” Scripture and disprove everyone’s notion of who Jesus of Nazareth is — King of Kings and Lord of All. I expect it to deceive ALMOST everyone.)

I wish they’d reveal how the text compared to the modern text. If it’s very close, word for word for example, it would be very good evidence as to the authenticity of the accounts.

Likely, you will first need to pay before seeing that evidence. Hope I'm wrong.

There were some serious problems with Secret Mark.
On the one hand, Morton Smith was an accomplished scholar.
On the other hand, we only have his notes and photographs as the original ms went missing. Also, there was some possible indication that Smith was either duped or else maybe even was playing a trick of his own, it is just not known for sure, and many or most scholars no longer consider S. Mark reliable.

I was just having a bit of fun, imagining what might be afoot with the new discovery...given that its being kept hush-hush ... and COULD, I cannot know of course...but COULD be another one of the ‘hoax for profit’ situations we’ve seen a few times with ‘archeological findings’

I guess I’m just suspicious how this one may be coming down, is all.

I can’t know yet, at least not from the very sketchy news story we have so far. We will see.

Best,
fhc
