And it shows that the invading Anglo Saxons did not wipe out the Britons of 1,500 years ago, but mixed with them.

It is rare that any group totally wipes out another. The women are usually spared and a number of the men are taken as slaves.

The Germanic tribes didn't have anything personal against the Celts, they just wanted their land.

Not to mention that the Celts and the Germanic tribes were related back in the misty past.

Are you saying I am incorrect? I suppose there is a slight chance that this is true, due to my penchant for paying attention to oftenwise (sic) disinforming (sic) subject matter. However, I do try to maintain a proclivity for correction on occasions.

Q: Who then does have a genetic connection to Aristotle’s contemporaries? Does this mean that ancient Greeks were not swarthy layabouts?

I thought this was well known. The Nazis considered the British less racially mixed than the French and therefore natural allies, just like the Nordic countries.

When you say favorable terms for surrender, I assumed you were implying the Nazis demanded something like the Vichy Regime in UK.

In actual fact, all they wanted was for the Brits to stop fighting so they could fight Russia without a two-front war.

Those Visigoths romped all over a lot of Spain during and after the fall of Rome on an orgy of revenge against Rome.

My ancestors were Spanish-mostly Basques-who came to New Spain/Mexico in the late 16th-early 17th centuries and to what is now SW Texas and NM in the late 1700’s. Even with a generous helping of Native American over a couple of centuries, I’m one of several redheads with gray/green eyes in the family-we have some blondes, too-and most of us have medium olive skin.

That’s interesting actually. Considering how all the Nazis wanted to do is bomb London into the stone age. They were very inventive in this respect, I have to give them credit. The technology they developed took us to the moon, and made the most powerful rocket in history. Too bad so many had to die in such terrible ways to make that possible.

The ancient Greeks actually considered everyone else to barbarous. It’s not surprisingly difficult to imagine, actually. Democracy is not a popular concept today, to the utter detriment of rational thought. Personally I understand why God thinks we’re all idiots.

The Romans appeared to have problem distinguishing between Germans, Celts and mixed people (Belgae) by appearance. Read Julius Caesar. So we’re the Cimbri and Teutones Celts or Germans? Or both? I read a book on the Volkerwanderung, translated from German into tortured English. The author maintains that many of these tribes derived their names from the ruling clan of warlords while the rank and file included Celts, Germans, Iranians and Hunt of different tribal origin who continually organized,re-organized, broke apart and reassembled under different chieftains so pigeonholing them by lineage was difficult and in many cases impossible. That may have been the situation here. Ascribing modern views of ethnicity and nationhood to people living in a culture of this period may be flawed in itself.

They did, especially in Central and Eastern Spain.

3 of my 4 Grandparents are of Basque origin. Basques are a resilient race of people and I’m proud of my Basque ancestry. My folks are semi olive-skinned, but only in the summer :).

Wife is half Basque & half Catalan. I’ve met a few redheaded Basques from the old country.

Ancient Blood

"The peoples of the British Isles, those we think of as being Celts, Picts, Britons, Welsh, Saxons, Jutes, Angles, Danes, Normans - although they became separated by language, local cultural traits and the passing of time, were all descendents of those first people, our mutual north European ancestors of the distant past. Despite the great passage of time and the periodical influx of kindred invaders, related to us by blood, and ruling elites, 80% of the modern British population can trace their genetic inheritance to the first settlers of these islands all those thousands of years ago. "

The Nazis wanted to strike a deal to divide the world with the British before war started. Then they wanted to do the same after conquering France. At that point it seemed to them utterly illogical for Britain to do anything else.

From a Machievellian POV they were 100% right. Luckily for the world the Brits weren’t good Machievellians. Some things were more important to them than their own wealth and power.

As far as the Germans being determined to destroy London, it’s thoroughly documented what happened there. The Luftwaffe was initially given firm instruction to avoid bombing cities. Instead they concentrated on taking out airfields to cripple the RAF. They were quite possibly well on the way to accomplishing this when a German squadron accidentally unloaded on the East End.

The next night, the RAF bombed Berlin, more than a little ineffectually, in reprisal. Hitler was embarrassed and infuriated because his boasts of German inviolability were shown to be empty.

So he diverted much of the Luftwaffe’s capacity to attacking cities, which of course took pressure off the airfields. Arguably this is one of the main reasons the RAF won the Battle of Britain.

The later V1 and V2 attacks were simply an attempt to strike back in whatever limited way they could. They were pretty much useless from a military POV, being mainly a morale boost for the Germans, who were having the crap bombed out of them around the clock.

The British lost <70k civilians from enemy action during the war, the Germans 1.1M. The Germans probably lost more civilians in some individual raids than the Brits lost during the whole war.

My mother was Black Irish, very pretty but very nasty. Someone explained that the Spanish had mixed Arab blood, which would account for a cruel streak.

Fascinating. But I do get the impression that the Battle of Britain was a total disaster for Germany because it cost them almost the entire Luftwaffe. It wasn’t just crazy or stupid, it was crazy stupid, but what do you expect from a Nazi? It was like Hitler had no idea that an air force could be used for defense. Good thing for everyone else, because there was little left to stop our bombers.

By the way, I was watching a WWII documentary once with someone, and there was a person talking about his role as a bomber pilot. We were both saying “he kinda sounds like Jimmy Stewart”. Then the image switched to him and it’s Jimmy Stewart! It turns out he quit Hollywood to volunteer. Imagine George Clooney doing that. OK, don’t.

This topic was posted 3/19/2015, thanks again for the thread, ek_hornbeck.
For what may be the first time ever, the weekly digest topic / ping is a re-ping.
I watched / listened to episode 1 of this yesterday. It's 22 years old, and there were the usual ponderous, sometimes nonsensical statements of chaired UK academics, but I enjoyed it.
