Ancient 'untouched' tomb discovered on Dingle Peninsula [Bronze Age, County Kerry, Ireland]

An ancient tomb, described by archaeologists as "untouched" and "highly unusual" has been discovered on the Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry...

The tomb was uncovered by a digger during land reclamation work when a large stone slab was upturned, revealing a slab-lined chamber beneath.

On closer inspection an adjoining sub-chamber was found at what appears to be the front of the tomb.

The tomb contained an unusual smooth oval-shaped stone and what is believed to be human bone.

It is believed the tomb may date to the Bronze Age (2000BC-500BC), but it could be even earlier as it displays a number of highly unusual features...

"Given its location, orientation and the existence of the large slab your initial thought is this is a Bronze Age tomb.

"But the design of this particular tomb is not like any of the other Bronze Age burial sites we have here," said Micheal O Coileain...

"This tomb appears to be completely untouched and in its original state and contains human remains.

"That is very rare. It is an extremely significant find as the original structure has been preserved and not interfered with, as may have occurred in the case of other uncovered tomb," he said.

Those are some pretty big slabs for some guys to have had to move around by hand. I’m sure many smashed fingers and toes were involved in constructing this thing.

Cool. Bronze Age stuff is rare.

Have you ever checked out a TV series called “Time Team”? It was a bunch of archeology experts doing quick, radical digs.

It was fascinating. Right up your alley.

Yup, loved it, most of the episodes are found on YouTube, maybe all of them by now, and Tony R’s other shows as well, other BBC documentaries.

My uncle lived in Kerry and gave me a tour of the neolithic circles and stone works. Required before you had to take him to the local pub for a few drinks. The whole area is full of things like this.

I had never heard of it until this year.

You could easily ping the ggg list to each episode until they catch on, perhaps in 2 years’ time. A fun time could be had by all.

What threw me off was the stupid title. If they had titled the show sumthin like “extreme Archaeology” I would have been watching from the beginning.
