The Knights of the Golden Circle is a new one for me, though am familiar with closely related activities of Southern filibusters, Fire Eaters and Northern Copperheads.
That term, "Knights of the Golden Circle" gives a name and organization to a more generalized idea, often remarked on: of a proposed Confederate Caribbean slave empire.
For KGC, that was their raison d'etre.

It's curious to note that among its alleged members were both John Wilkes Boothe and Texas Governor Sam Houston.
But further reading shows that Sam Houston opposed the KGC's anti-Unionism, and did not support its schemes.

Also most curious to note that according to their own report, the Knights of the Golden Circle was founded in the same month and year as the Republican Party: July 1854, Republicans in Jackson, Michigan, KGC in Lexington, Kentucky.

But by far the most important point to note is that with few exceptions (i.e., Sam Houston, Independent) Knights of the Golden Circle voted politically for DEMOCRATS!

Lincoln’s views on blacks was positively mainstream for the times. It doesn’t strain the imagination to see that he was trying to transverse very troubled waters. I see no problem with his views.

I’m curious. Have you ever traveled outside the United States? You may have, of course. I’m just wondering.

Truth is I’m used to this — to people having some kind of what we are, of thinking that somehow there is something general to be said about us, which of course there isn’t. We’re as bad or as good as anybody else. It’s the experience of being on the receiving end of pre-judgment — of broad assumptions — that has made me unable to form broad assumptions about anybody else. I feel lucky in that. It isn’t even true that we’re smarter than anybody else. There’s cultural value given to education in some sectors of our population, and not in others — for instance, everybody in my family went to college, and in my wife’s family, until my wife, almost nobody. I think I may have once counted up the number of countries to which I’ve travelled or lived in, but I can’t recall the number now. Probably in to 20-30 range.

What do you make of Holocaust skepticism? Not outright denial, I mean the idea that the 6 million number is exaggerated.

I can speak for no other cultural or racial group. I can only say that having been a Jew for all of my 53 years, and having a very large extended family of Jews, in addition to my wife’s extended family, the stereotype of what the world thinks Jews are like has nothing to do with who we are.

How about the stereotype of people driven by hate and suspicion?

The numbers are irrelevant, with regard to the holocaust. Let’s just keep it, for now, to my grandmother’s eight brothers who were murdered. They were poor folk from a small town in Romania. One was a teacher, a couple were farmers. One was nine years old. So two million or six million or who cares — my grandmother’s brothers were living their lives in a small town in Romania and then — well, how about it, good decent Germanic white people who had Christmas tress at Christmas time! — took them out of their homes, locked them up and and murdered them. Brutally.

Are you kidding me? By the mid-20’s all the Jews had been purged. Look what Stalin did to Trotsky. That played out on every level. My father and his family had to flee in 1926 because it was becoming impossible to live there. My grandfather had a little store in a medium sized city in the Ukraine and Jews were easy targets for roving bands of cossacks, with the government looking the other way. You seem smart and well-read. If you think Jews were responsible for the horrors of the Stalinist murders, when they were actually among the most salient victims, then you aren’t reading the right books. Again, this is something I know from my family, in addition to what I’ve read. That there were Jewish leftists in American who remained willfully blind to Stalin’s crimes - yeah, that’s for sure true, and a sad stain on us.

Some important facts to remember:

1. Between 1881 & 1920 about two million Jews left Russia due to discrimination, persecutions, pogroms, arrests, beatings & other state-sponsored anti-Jewish actions.

2. At the same time, some Jews joined many political organizations, covering the entire political spectrum, from anarchists & Bolsheviks to Constitutional Democrats.

3. Among Bolsheviks, from the time of the Revolution (1917) until the 1930s, Jews comprised about 5% overall, up to 20% in some leadership roles.

4. During the 1930s purges, Stalin largely eliminated Jews from senior party, government, diplomatic, security and military positions.
   The best known of his Jewish victims was Leon Trotsky.

5. As a boy, Stalin himself attended a Greek Orthodox priesthood school and the leading Russian Orthodox seminary in Tiflis, Georgia's capital.

6. Historians these days typically put the total death toll from Stalin's tyranny at around 20 million, which roughly matches the 20 million non-combatants (including six million Jews) killed by Hitler's policies during WWII.

So, if we were somehow to blame any religion for Stalin's murders, those would be the Greek and Russian Orthodox, since he was trained by them, and for Hitler the Roman Catholics who taught him.
But of course, that's totally absurd, since both Stalin and Hitler were certainly atheists whose only "god" was themselves, their ideologies and their all-powerful governments.

Jews were their victims, not perpetrators.

Stalin purged all of the Jewish Bolsheviks, not only Trotsky, but Kamenev and Zinoiev as well.

In fact, Stalin was very happy to have Hitler do his dirty work for him at Babi Yar, before Stalin decided to get serious and win the war.

I did a google search, which produced the facts reviewed above.

In fact, for the first 60 years -- from 1868 until 1928, most blacks voted Republican.
Then, beginning with Franklin Roosevelt in 1932, most Northern blacks changed over to Democrats.
Still, about 1/3 of blacks voted Republican up until the election of 1964, when Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" and Barry Goldwater's Conservative Conscience drove 95% of blacks to the Democrats, where they have remained ever since.

In the presidential election of 1932, FDR was still so strongly identified with Southern white Democrat racists, that 75% of blacks voted for the Republican, hapless Herbert Hoover.

As the chart above shows, all that began to change by the election of 1936.
