Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday said that the Senate Judiciary Committee should delay its confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in the wake of former President Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's guilty plea.
"It's a game changer. It should be. ... In my view, the Senate Judiciary Committee should immediately pause the consideration of the Kavanaugh nomination," Schumer said from the Senate floor.
He added that he thought Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, had scheduled Kavanaugh's hearing "too soon" and he believed it should be delayed.
Kavanaugh's hearing is scheduled to begin Sept. 4. Republicans have given no indication they are open to delaying the hearing.
But Democrats are demanding that it be delayed after Cohen pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign finance law violations.
Lanny Davis, Cohen's lawyer, has said that Cohen's decision implicates the president of wrongdoing.
"Very clearly, there is no dispute that Donald Trump committed a crime," he told MSNBC's "Morning Joe". "No dispute, because his own lawyers said to the special counsel in a letter that he directed, that's the word they used, Michael Cohen to make these payments.
Democrats have raised concerns that Kavanaugh has a broad view on executive authority and would try to protect Trump from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
Schumer told reporters on Tuesday that Kavanaugh would not say in their meeting if he believed a president could be subpoenaed.
He added on Wednesday that his answer combined with Cohen's plea makes Kavanaugh's nomination a "danger."
"At the very least, the very least, it is unseemly for the president of the United States to be picking a Supreme Court justice who could soon be effectively a juror in a case involving the president himself," Schumer said.
Several Democrats on the Judiciary Committee, which Schumer is not a member of, have also called for Kavanaugh's hearings to be delayed.
I remember that sniveling little twerp on the Cable shows during the Lewinski-Paula Jones time frame.
He’d get on and start crying and I mean literally crying about the world coming to an end if the H.O.R. voted out articles of Impeachment against Rapist Bill.
Um no. It's a brilliant tactic meant to agitate the leftists into doing "whatever is necessary" to stop the appointment.
If anything, this might indicate it's a good time to check your emergency supplies...
I have a hunch McCain is deteriorating fast.
I have a hunch a morphine drip has entered his mind.
What does the Kavanaugh hearing have to do with Michael Cohen? It is clear that Schmucky Schumer is hoping beyond hope that Trump is somehow impeached due to something connected with the Michael Cohen hubbub and therefore would not be eligible to push Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. That’s somewhat akin to Schmucky pedaling a bicycle furiously with his spindly legs and hoping he can attain enough thrust to make it to the moon: a pretty darn long shot. Crawl back into your hole, Schmucky; you are a disgrace to humankind.
Donald Trump did NOTHING illegal! The so called experts flooding the media including Fox reporters are totally ignorant of the law. I don’t care that some have legal degrees, they are downright stupid in their interpretation of the written law! Their lead monkey says something and all the rest ape him straight down the line. Cohen’s lawyer should be charged with misleading his client. OBVIOUSLY, he is in the pocket of the left!
Cohen was coerced into pleading guilty to a non-crime.
.......................................................
Absolutely correct. His lawyer, now asking for a go fund me of a half million for Cohen’s legal expenses, should be charged with selling out to the prosecution and not advising Cohen correctly on the LAW!
Trump did NOTHING wrong according to the law. This is all on the kindergarten level and no adult should buy the garbage being shoveled by Meuller and Co.
What a d-bag
Exactly...Schumer has used everything he can possibly come up with to delay the hearings until after the confirmation of Kavanaugh in hopes of getting control of at least the House, then try to impeach even if the Senate won’t vote guilty.
The pompous a$$ should crawl back under his rock.
Uh....no.
“The established Republicans and Democrats ought to do this Republic a great favor and take their ill-gotten gains and fade into the sunset.”
We, The People, need to take up The Constitution, and MAKE them do it, by whatever means may become necessary.
I disavow any knowledge of this :)
The hearing should go on as planned. Enough of the Democratic baloney.
So, don't expect the republican party as a whole to come to the aide of Trump. Expect the leadership to suggest Trump not campaign for republican candidates, claiming that Cohen's statements look bad for 'The Donald'.... and.... and they should hold hearings on possible Trump criminality before the midterms.
I thought that was just Chuck stink. STFUChuck.
Bumpin’ that, thanks
I hereby parrot your statement big time.
Grasping at straws, didn’t Dems make that illegal?
Today the sun came up in the east and threatens to set in the west, so according to Chuck Schumer, the Kavanaugh hearings must be postponed. That’s the logic is the lying, ethicless Schumer.
Here’s a Hatch statement on CNN a little over an hour ago, doesn’t sound to dire.
“”Well I’m not very happy about it,” admitted Sen. Orrin Hatch, the Utah Republican and Trump supporter who is retiring next year. But in a jawdropping spin, Hatch said the President shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of his staff.
“Naturally it makes you very concerned, but the President should not be held responsible for the actions of the people he’s trusted,” Hatch said, ignoring the fact that Cohen alleged Trump directed him to orchestrate the illegal payments.””
