Drop the term Anglo-Saxon as it is ‘bound up with white supremacy’, say academics

Academics have called for the term Anglo-Saxon to be dropped because it is “bound up with white supremacy” — an idea described as “mad as a bag of ferrets” by one historian.

The term traditionally refers to groups from across the North Sea, including Angles and Saxons, who settled in Britain after the end of Roman rule, and to their descendants and their culture until the Norman Conquest.

However, it has also been used by imperialists and white-supremacists to describe white people of British origin. Hitler wrote admiringly of “Anglo-Saxon determination” to hold India. Some academics believe that the term is not only tainted by these associations but is also historically inaccurate.

The term “Anglo-Saxon” gained popularity in the 1700-1800s as a way of linking white people “to their supposed origins”

Mary Rambaran-Olm, a specialist in early medieval England, wrote this week in History

Anglo-Saxons are already not reproducing at a rate where their “superiority” is sustainable. Perhaps in a few generations they will all be gone and the rest of the non-WASP population will revert to the 18th century way of life.

Academics and ‘intelligent’ can no longer be used in the same sentence.

Academics and ‘ignorant’, ‘fool’, or ‘idiot’ is still a safe bet though.

My personal favorite is ‘dumbass’.

The English language clearly has it's its origin in northwest India.

This is a gravely misleading statement, insofar as even Old English did not exist at the time of the migration from northwest India. It would be more-correct to say that Indo-European emanated from that region.

Regards,

Just what we need, more middle of the night while playing endless games of backgammon musings being taken seriously.

If you change history you erase the basis for today’s reality and any dictator can say “history begins with my total dominance today.”

All dictators had to erase history first. Then indoctrinate.

The great Library of Alexandria was literally destroyed and its treasures lost, as the new boss wanted only his own rule to be chronicled.

Islamists kidnapped a gentle biblical archaeology expert and tortured him to tell where the Judeo-Christian relics were located. Biblical Archeology Review (I subscribe) reported this. Muslims used air hammers, axes and dynamite charges to destroy all pre-Mohammed treasures, written tablets and statues.

Someday children will learn “Obama, our greatest president abolished slavery in his 2nd term. Our Muslim Nation today began in January, 2021 when the Democratic Socialists destroyed the legacy of the Trump White Supremacist Party.”
Only a few pictures of Trump will remain, to be used in propaganda.

How could they possibly object to the term Anglo-Saxon?

The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes were the immigrant invaders of their time.

Most experts on Indo-European origins seem to think that the area just north of the Black Sea is where the ancestral population lived. I don’t think anyone thinks the language family originated in India other than some scholars in India. Nowadays the majority of the people in the subcontinent speak one of the Indo-European languages but they were introduced by “Aryan” invaders.

The term "Inuit" has gained currency in recent years only because some PC types decided that the traditional term "Eskimo" was offensive.

Enjoy an Inuit Pie!

"Sioux" is also a term coined by enemies of the tribe.

"Academic" can also refer to something of theoretical interest, not tied to something immediately practical.

It can also refer to Plato's school of philosophy...so it could be offensive to Peripatetics, Stoics, Epicureans, or Cynics.

The organization promoting this:

Medievalists of Color: Statement of Support for Dr. Mary Rambaran-Olm

At the recent Race before Race symposium in Washington, DC, Dr. Mary Rambaran-Olm ended her powerful talk on periodization and early English studies with a statement that she is resigning from her position on the board of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists (ISAS). Medievalists of Color (MOC) wholeheartedly supports Dr. Rambaran-Olm’s courageous action.

Dr. Rambaran-Olm has worked tirelessly for years – as an independent scholar without institutional support of her own – to dismantle the deeply entrenched and pervasive white supremacy of early English studies in her field and from within ISAS. She performed this labor despite her vulnerability as a woman of color in an organization so dominated by whiteness that it has not yet ceased referring to itself by a name that attracts and empowers white supremacists. White supremacists have threatened Dr. Rambaran-Olm with bodily harm in response to her recent talk, and we must ask how ISAS’s attachment to whiteness fueled that threat.

Dr. Rambaran-Olm’s willingness to endure the heavy intellectual and emotional toll exacted by ISAS’s environment testifies to her longstanding and brave commitment to inclusivity and community in that organization. But ultimately, as Sara Ahmed teaches us, “We learn about the techniques of power from our efforts to transform institutional norms.” Dr. Rambaran-Olm’s resignation is a principled act that results from her informed judgment that meaningful change in the organization and the field will not be possible from within ISAS. We honor and trust her assessment of that situation.

We thank Dr. Rambaran-Olm for both her valuable contributions to early English scholarship and her heroic efforts to amplify marginalized voices in that field.

ANY culture that supports the 'no snitch rule' is inferior... And yes - some cultures ARE better, more responsible and produce better results than others. And that's what matters: results. Proof is in the pudding...
