Johan van Zyl said Brexit and Covid were a "double whammy" for Toyota. The boss of Toyota's European business has warned that a no-deal Brexit could make its UK plants uncompetitive.
Dr Johan van Zyl said such an outcome would create a "very negative investment environment" in Britain and be "very, very negative" for his business.
...But Mr van Zyl said no decisions on the future of its UK plants - a car factory at Burnaston in Derbyshire and an engine facility at Deeside in North Wales - could be taken until the outcome of trade talks was known.
...Now the company is forecasting a strong recovery for its European business. But according to Dr van Zyl, its UK recovery could be made more difficult by Brexit.
..."What we could put in place, we have done - in terms of adjusting our systems, looking at customs procedures which will be required, looking at increasing stock levels.
"Up to a point we can do it. But you can't do a huge amount of that - it's only a limited few days.
"So it can be very, very negative for our business if we have a no-deal scenario. Very negative. And even if there is a deal, we need to know the content of the deal. We need to get those details to really be able to establish what is the real impact. We haven't seen those yet".

Toyota plants in europe - taken from toyota-global.com
Toyota's problem is that faced by many manufacturers who have used the western european supply chain.
To explain - image if illinois was leaving the USA - many factories there rely on sub-components manufactured across the USA and sent to IL. Similarly factories outside IL also rely to sub-components from factories within IL.
To adequately plan this, Toyota will need to limit it's JIT (Just in time) manufacturing and keep stockpiles on hand in factories. Ultimately it will need to shift sub-contracts to localized factories.
Long-term that's what would happen, but short term there will be disorder.

Oh and just for those who will post -- Brexit has ALREADY HAPPENED guys, this is about how the trade deal with flow of goods will happen
With all the blood we’ve spilled in Europe all we have to show for it is the filthy Maoists who currently rule in Brussels. We should have let the Nazis...or the Russians...have it.
Johnson can distract from the realities of his authoritarian regime imposed in name of fighting the coronavirus.
I’m going to go out on a limb here. Brexit ain’t gonna happen.
It will if Trump wins.
If he doesn’t, Brexit is dead.
Brexit has already happened. What they may not end up with is a new trade deal, which is probably better than the crap negotiations going on now.
The huge irony of that is that Marxists and other varieties of Socialists actively HATE the EU, because they see it as a banker's club that exploits the masses. Jeremy Corbyn and Tony Benn, high-profile Socialists in the UK, fought against EU membership for their whole political careers.

I saw Lech Walesa speak once. The way he put it, it was difficult to leave the USSR because no country MADE one thing. Each made parts to a product.
Looks like the same game at play here.
Dude - as I said, Brexit has ALREADY happened. As of 31 January, 2020, the UK was no longer part of the EU.
In this case it is companies who spread their supply chains across countries
Lech said that the bloc countries didn’t make a washing machine or a car on their own. That the production was split up only into components.
I don’t know - I’ll need to find out about that
Boris doesn’t want to impose authoritarianism but he is coming under pressure to do it from within his own party and every opposition party plus millions of Karens amongst the public who threaten to destroy his electabilith if the death toll goes up.
It isnt great but it I’d better to have this imposed by someone who hates having to do it and will repeal it as soon as the need has gone, Labour 2ould keep it in place forever because they love control.
