Despite its reputation for gastronomy, France has become an American fast-food mecca. Between 2019 and 2023, more than 1,300 fast-food restaurants opened in the country, and over the past decade, sales increased by 61%. McDonald’s has the biggest stronghold because of its first-mover advantage. But Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, KFC and Five Guys are expanding their reach. New players like Popeyes and Krispy Kreme moved in for the first time in early 2024 as French consumers continue to seek affordable and convenient food options.

I bet in a generation or two you will see American waistlines on these svelte French citizens.

There was a book that came out in 2007 called "French Women Don't Get Fat." Goodbye to all that.

When I was in France, 1969, I found the food to be rather repulsive. The long loaf French bread however was wonderful (1 French Frank per loaf). The vine very affordable. At the Univ. At Univ. Of Grenoble cafeteria, several times per month the main entre would be beef tongue. Just an 8 inch long cow’s tongue. Bread and vine great. Food horrible.

Tongue was a common food in US up to the 60s. We had it occasionally. Could be tough.

‘There was a book that came out in 2007 called “French Women Don’t Get Fat.”’

Never read the book, I wonder if they mentioned the huge difference (~3X) between cigarette-smoking rates between French women and American women. Smoking is an appetite suppressant, and nicotine is a stimulant that accelerates metabolism. It’s sill to ignore all that when approximately 40% of French women in the 18-50 age-range are smokers.

As for “why the French love American fast food”... it’s pretty simple... they’re human beings, and American fast food combines sugar, salt and fat in a tasty combination. A family member used to teach 2nd grade. She had a student who’d arrived from India approximately 3 months earlier. One day, the little boy told the class, “When we moved here from Mumbai, I thought I would hate the food. But I LOVE American food. Hamburgers, french fries, pizza, doughnuts, fried chicken. It’s all GREAT!”

I've spent a little time in France (in the 60's). After some unsavory experimentation, I settled on sandwich le jambon-fromage as something I could eat, like, and know what's in it.

They could do with an In-n-out, just sayin.

cause it’s delish? Plus they walk everywhere, so they burn it off easier. and the smoking!
leave people to eat what they want as long as they don’t make you eat it.

When I was a kid I had beef tongue for dinner, at least once.

Back in the 60s, the supermarket meat counter still had a diagram of the whole steer posted on the wall behind the counter, and "variety meats" were still sold and consumed. We would also have beef liver on occasion.

From someone who has been there:

“A typical meal in France would be frogs’ legs or snails for starter. The main course is usually meat or fish and green vegetables with a small portion of carbohydrate e.g., gratin dauphinoise (potatoes with melted cheese). The French rarely consume pasta or rice. There are no wholegrains in French meals. Cheese follows the main course. Plenty of dairy and saturated fat there. Dessert (if partaken) tends to be less sweet than American/British options. Many French desserts are fat/cream, rather than sugar, based e.g., chocolate pots, Crème Brulée, Crème caramel etc. Even French apple tart is little more than apples and pastry – it’s not sweet.”

When the French go high-carb, they will start looking like Americans.

Good point. I read the book and I don't recall that the author ever mentioned smoking as a factor.
