It’s no secret that fireworks can cause some serious air pollution, in the United States as well as in other countries where holiday displays are common, like China and India. But not everyone is equally at risk from the noxious particles that suffuse the sky during our pyrotechnic light shows. In California, for example, vulnerable populations are more exposed to fireworks pollution on the Fourth of July.

In judicious hands, the ability to blow things up represents Americans' fearless legacy of harnessing the powers of nature in the pursuit of innovationWhen I was a kid, we always celebrated Independence Day by going down to my grandparents’ house. They lived on a lake, and you could walk five houses down in either direction and know just about every single neighbor, half of whom were relatives. After an afternoon of eating boiled peanuts and hot dogs and jumping off the dock, all the kids knew the best part came when it got dark. We’d all go out to the...

One of the best things about celebrating America’s Independence Day is spreading out a blanket under the stars and waiting for the “kabooms” that light up the night sky. Fireworks on the Fourth of July are a deep tradition in America, as small towns and big cities alike across the nation light off the celebratory explosives to commemorate the passage of the Declaration of Independence and our freedom from Britain. Unfortunately, last year, firework displays were canceled in many places around the country due to the rapidly spreading coronavirus. Thankfully, restrictions have started to lift in most states as more...

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday it’s possible that Americans may be able to gather in larger groups on the Fourth of July — if the nation doesn’t pull back on public safety measures. “You know, that’s entirely conceivable and possible,” Fauci said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Fauci explained that while President Biden set a more “reasonable” Independence Day goal of small groups being able to gather, it doesn’t mean that larger celebrations are off the table. “What the president was saying is that we traditionally have, at the Fourth of July, the kind of barbecue in the backyard, the kind...

We live in Northwest Phoenix, AZ. A lot of fireworks were set off on Halloween. We had not noticed fireworks being a part of Halloween during prior years. We are now hearing fireworks, again, tonight. First, is anyone else noticing fireworks in their neighborhoods? Second, can anyone imagine what would occasion fireworks? I am concerned that maybe we are being conditioned to hearing explosive sounds in time for the election.
