Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled the design of California's new quarter Monday, which shows conservationist John Muir, a California condor and Yosemite National Park's Half Dome mountain on the coin's tails side.</p> <p>The quarter commemorates California's Sept. 9, 1850, entry into the United States, and is the 31st 25-cent coin to be unveiled as part of a 10-year, 50-state quarters program conducted by the U.S. Mint. States reveal their quarters in honor of the order in which they ratified the U.S. Constitution and joined the union.</p>

<p>U.S. 3rd-Qtr GDP Grew at 8.2% Rate, Fastest Since '84 (Update2) Nov. 25 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. economy grew at an 8.2 percent annual rate in the third quarter, faster than the government initially estimated as companies boosted inventories in September to meet the surge in demand.</p>

<p>LOS ANGELES (AP) - More than a quarter of California residents were born outside the United States, giving it a higher proportion of foreign-born residents than any other state, according to new census statistics.</p> <p>A U.S. Census Bureau report based on a 2002 survey found that 27 percent of Californians were born outside the country, compared to 12 percent nationwide. The state was followed by New York with 21 percent and New Jersey with 19 percent.</p>

With the state quarters set to end thier run when the Hawaii quarter is minted at the end of 2008, will that be the end of the Washington-head US quarter? What does our treasury have in store for this coin for 2009 and beyond? Well, I dunno, but I'd like to suggest replacing George's bust with that of the father of our Constitution, James Madison. Washington will forever be on the $1 bill (which isn't counterfeited that much so not worthy of redesign) and will thus remain highly visible as our most common script. <p>California moved a step closer Monday toward a quarter-sized defining image, as Gov. Gray Davis announced the five top designs to depict the Golden State on a two-bit piece.</p> <p>The five designs will be fine-tuned by the U.S. Mint before the official California quarter is selected by Davis. The coin is scheduled to be issued in January 2005.</p>

Taking its cue from Jefferson Middle School in Fort Wayne, Ind. legislators from the state of Massachusetts have taken on the issue of redesigning the state's commemorative quarter. The Jefferson Middle school's mascot is a minuteman bearing the same image as that on the state's quarter. In October of 2001 the image inside the main door of the school was repainted to exclude the firearm.
