Sheldon Alberts: Palin stirs the Republican pot
National Post (blog) ^ | October 23, 2009, 11:00 | Sheldon Alberts

Sarah Palin has entered the fray over a congressional special election in New York's 23rd district that has turned into a battle among Republicans over how to define themselves as they seek to recover from the election routs of 2006 and 2008.

On one side, the party establishment is backing a GOP moderate named Dede Scozzafava who is pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as stout a conservative as any, has endorsed Scozzafava in the belief that she represents the best chance of winning in a region where Republicans have fallen on hard times and ideological conservatism doesn't always sell.

On the other side is Gingrich's former colleague, onetime House majority leader Dick Armey, and a host of conservative groups who have deemed Scozzafava to be a RINO (Republican In Name Only) and have bolted to support a Conservative Party candidate named Doug Hoffman.

Now Sarah Palin wants her say as well. The former Alaska governor, who only one year ago was campaigning to become the Republican vice president, posted a Facebook entry endorsing Hoffman -- not the GOP. She's also using her political action committee to help fund Hoffman's third-party campaign.

Support Doug Hoffman
The people of the 23rd Congressional District of New York are ready to shake things up, and Doug Hoffman is coming on strong as Election Day approaches! He needs our help now.

The votes of every member of Congress affect every American, so it's important for all of us to pay attention to this important Congressional campaign in upstate New York. I am very pleased to announce my support for Doug Hoffman in his fight to be the next Representative from New York's 23rd Congressional district. It's my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a "time for choosing."

The federal government borrows, spends, and prints too much money, while our national debt hits a record high. Government is growing while the private sector is shrinking, and unemployment is on the rise. Doug Hoffman is committed to ending the reckless spending in Washington, D.C. and the massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. He is also fully committed to supporting our men and women in uniform as they seek to honorably complete their missions overseas.

And best of all, Doug Hoffman has not been anointed by any political machine.

Doug Hoffman stands for the principles that all Republicans should share: smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty.

Political parties must stand for something. When Republicans were in the wilderness in the late 1970s, Ronald Reagan knew that the doctrine of "blurring the lines" between parties was not an appropriate way to win elections. Unfortunately, the Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate who more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. This is why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party's ticket.

Republicans and conservatives around the country are sending an important message to the Republican establishment in their outstanding grassroots support for Doug Hoffman: no more politics as usual.

You can help Doug by visiting his official website below and joining me in supporting his campaign: http://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com/donate3.html.

Has everyone seen this: “The Most Important Number in Politics Today.”

Doug Hoffman is the Conservative alternative in this race (or Hoffman by PayPal).

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” libeRal democRat. Mark Steyn has coined the term DIABLO for her and others like her. Democrat In All But Label Only.

There are also at least 17 unprincipled DIABLO enablers in the house who have donated funds or otherwise supported to this LibeRal democRat's DIABLO’s campaign. They include Boehner, Cantor, Sessions, Hensarling, Brown-Waite and McCotter. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These unprincipled enablers should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year. Also, perhaps those of us who donated to the RNC or RCCC should ask for our money back so we can support the conservative candidates of our choice.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as stout a conservative as any...

Stout, maybe, but a conservative-of-convenience, if not and outright RINO.

He even converted to Catholicism as a political strategy.

“Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as stout a conservative as any”

I like Gingrich, he had his time and did good thing for the economy, but to call him “as stout a conservative as any” is clueless.

"...pro-choice and pro-gay marriage."

Isn't moderate, imho, but liberal.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as stout a conservative as any, has endorsed Scozzafava in the belief that she represents the best chance of winning...

That endorsement revokes any claim Mr. Gingrich had to be considered a "conservative" in my house.

How long will the Republican Party sacrifice its principles on the expedient altar of "winning".

I would suggest that electing someone of the opposition's idealogy is not "winning", regardless of the brand name put on the one who votes to enact the policies of the Liberals.

This will guarantee that the Dems get another 4 years to scrape up the scraps of the uS economy they have missed grabbing the big chunks if the 'pubbies don't get a damn clue.

The current political climate has created a tremendous opportunity for a candidate who is clear, concise, and diametrically opposed to the Obamite ultra-liberalism. Watch the Republicans do all they can to waste that opportunity, just as they did when they had both houses of Congress.

I hope their are enough "conservatives" in this district to go door-to-door and get the word out. If this is truly a solid Republican district then I'm sure if the people were shown the facts, rather than relying on them getting them from whatever media outlets they may follow then their eyes would be truly opened.

Please get the word out and pull this guy over the finish line. It could well be the turning point that saves this nation from the horrors of communist rule. And no, that's not hyperbole.

In defense of Newt, as an ex-Speaker, the only thing that matters is the count on the way to the majority. I’m sure he didn’t even know the facts or details of the New York election.

She is not Pro-Choice, She is Pro -Abortion. She has no desire to give you the Choice of not getting health insurance. She isn't interested in you Choice of not paying for CAP N Tax. She is only interested in allowing a woman to kill her unborn child at any time pre birth and have you help pay for it. That is not CHOICE!

I don’t just make this stuff up. Check “GOP Congressman: Scozzafava ‘Has to Win’” for the details. McCotter is one of the “Republican Leaders” who have come out in support of Scozzafava. I think maybe he has just been in DC a little too long. I thought he was one of the good conservatives, too.
