With all the recent news about injuries related to splintering maple baseball bats, do you think the MLB should ban them? Yes or no, and why? I'd be interetested to hear your thoughts.

Ban everything except soccer.

Then only sell tofu at the games.

Good enough for you?

Maybe they should go with shatter-proof plastic bats and whiffle balls so no one gets hurt.

Yeah. And I like vladimir998’s suggested use for them.

I’m not sure if I should take this seriously or not, but...

Having grown up in an era when EVERYONE used wooden bats, I can tell you flat out that metal bats are significantly more dangerous than wood ones. Which is worse?

1. an occasional splintered bat (a rare occurance).

2. zillion mile per hour base hits that nearly take the pitchers head off (occurs in almost every ball game using metal bats, at every level).

Let me be clear, the fat cats in MLB with their cadillac bat purchasing plans are part of the problem. We need a government program that will ensure availablity of bats for all, at a reasonable cost, and with a better level of safety. That’s why a $900B program to remove fraud, waste, and maple bats from MLB is the right thing for America today.

Not as dumb as it sounds.

The problem I have with metal bats is that it has turned even the weakest kid in Hank Aaron Jr. and amateur baseball into a home run derby.

The solution is to “de-juice” the ball so the game plays as it did back in the day when wooden bats were the norm. Heck, golf does testing to prevent super-hot balls from warping the game, why can’t baseball do the same thing?

I don't like maple bats because I'm a traditionalist. But I don't think that is reason enough to ban them. I'd like to see data on the advantages versus the risks.

There are far more people seriously injured with aluminum bats based on every statistic I've seen. Allowing maple bats to remain in Major League Baseball is akin to allowing gays to enter into partnerships and civil unions. Allowing aluminum bats would be akin to allow them to redefine marriage for everyone via gay marriage laws. Marriage would lose all meaning and so would Major League Baseball.

So, while I frown on the former, I adamantly abhor the later.

I think banning baseball would be safer for the players.

Safety first!

A broken bat flying at 20 mph is going to hurt no matter what kind of wood it is.

That said, I would prefer to use—if possible—a bat that's a made of a hardwood (like oak), but I'm not in a place to dictate to others what kind of bat to use.
