The basic reason Romney should be opposed by conservatives is that Romney is not a conservative. More specifically, Romney is the author of the $50 abortion, the originator of the gay marriage license, and the founder of big government-forced health care.
Those 3 are a mix of social and fiscal issues. The conclusion is that Romney is neither a fiscal conservative nor a social conservative. His tenure as governor of Massachusetts proves that point.
Now, as Romney is touted as the “etch-a-sketch” candidate who will shortly begin his tack to the left, principled conservatives will do well to begin listing their reasons for not ever supporting Mitt Romney for anything other than Citizen Mitt.
1. Abortion: Romney is the author of the $50 abortion.
2. Gay Marriage: Romney signed legislation requiring the issuing of gay marriage licenses. Romney has tried to “moderate” his position by becoming pro-gay union....big deal. He once told gay operatives that he was the gay lobby's best hope for getting their agenda into the republican party. (Look at that, too, in terms of abortion and judicial selections.)
3. RomneyCare: Sadly, Mitt thinks it's just fine to have state governments force you to buy health insurance. I suppose he finds the power to do that in the US Constitution. Oh...I remember...the place where the Constitution says “states can force the people to buy things they don't want to buy and enter into contracts they don't want to enter into.”
4. Give notice to the GOP-Establishment: It probably is very wise to shove down their throat what they are trying to shove down ours. They are not the masters of the conservative universe. Allowing them to think they are will simply encourage more of the same in the future. I'm sure the romney-bots and the romney-enablers will want their say about Romney opponents handing the election to Obama, but the manipulation by the GOP-E is what will lead to that.
5. Romney's “Scorched Earth” Campaign: Romney has divided conservatives and seriously weakened voter turnout. His strategy, liberal that he is, was to run ads via his SuperPac pigeonholing the conservative purity of his opponents. That kind of outrageous hypocrisy deserves punishment and not reward.
6. Conservative Resignation to supporting Romney appears to be surrender of conservative principle. The results of that could be far-reaching. It could mean that the republican movement is totally abandoned to the liberal establishment.
7. Judicial Appointments: "Liberty Counsel Action Vice President Matt Barber said Romney’s appointments were constitutional “living document” poster children.
“Many of Romney’s appointments were not only liberal, not only Democrats, but were radical counter-constitutionalists. How on earth can we expect that, as president, he would be any different?” Barber asked rhetorically."
8. Other reasons "Conservatives Should Continue to Oppose Romney after the Nomination" are welcome. Please post them below.
If Romney is the GOP nominee, I will resign my precinct chair position, I will change my party affiliation and I will write an open letter to explain why. I will probably switch to the Constitution Party.

I voted for him. He was making noise,testing the waters for quite a long time before entering. He was also one of the richest men in the nation at the time. This idea that someone new can come in,you understand that the way campaigns are run today that the possible field is only the very wealthiest individuals?

When push comes to shove (Romney as the nominee), I don’t know what I will do as of today. I don’t know why we believe that Obama will be re-elected or even if he will still be in politics in November or on his way out the door anyway. (I base re-election doubts on stuff I read on kos when I was trying find out what was going on with the occupy stuff last Fall. From the look of it, some of them have doubts) Then, there’s F&F, Solyndra...Lord Knows what else, that could take hold.
Look around on the internet. People don’t like or trust this guy & are claiming that they will *not* vote for him. We have four months to convince the RNC to back it off. Give them second thoughts.
To be honest, we’re not doing enough, en masse.
Remember when they tried to pass amnesty for illegals about 2007? The switchboard got shutdown in DC. It’s true we’re in a different time, otherwise 0Care never would have passed (that was republicans, independents, AND quite a few democrats raising cane)
But we need to at least try & get organized- petitions, phone calls, emails, letters to the editor, each on a given day or couple of days. People have lined the streets in support of Life.
There needs to be a clear message that cannot be skewed the way polls- and primaries/ caucuses can be.

If I had my way I would replace 80% of those in Washington - elected and appointed. But every day Obamna is in power stirring up class warfare, appointing Marxists to czarships, Federal judgeship’s, and other Federal posts, working to undermine the Republic, is a day my country gets worse - not better.
Romney is not the solution. But at least he is not actively seeking the destruction of my country with malice and forethought.
Those seem like principled reasons to me, Wm.

Good ideas, KG. Express total repudiation of their direction and their nominee, and they’ll do something. Probably try to sell us the Brooklyn Bridge, but at least we’d have more evidence that they are lying power hungry elitists.

Romney is not some variety of "less pure" conservative. He is not any kind of conservative at all. So, it isn't a matter of "purity". It's a matter of different ideology altogether. He is a liberal. I am a conservative. I will not support him. Ever.
FRiend I was a Paling supporter hardcore Paling supporter Mitt was my last choice. But my philosophy is you vote for the most conservative candidate in the primary and then you vote for the last candidate standing in the general. I’m not a Mitt fan but we elect a conservative Congress and hold the bastards feet to the fire. Mitt strikes me as a moderate but he also strikes me as a smarter politician than Obama he wont tip the apple cart too much he’ll be much more like an HW Bush. If we vote third party or stay home we forfeit the race and are directly responsible for electing the most liberal candidate of all Barrack Hussein Obama. If we elect Romney if he is the nominee at least we live to fight another day.
In the last 10 to 20 years conservatives have lost their conservatism and they’ve become big government totalitarians. This is why an elitist big government fraud like Romney is so popular, assuming we are being told the truth about his status as front runner. Conservatism is very ill these days and doesn’t look much different from liberalism.
Ron Paul is the only viable option for those who cherish liberty and a constitutionally limited government. None of the other candidates do more than talk about those ideas during election cycles.

As for me, now that Rick Santorum has dropped out, I am going to put my efforts into trying to convince conservative Christians and other Republicans who I personally know that a vote for Newt Gingrich is the best choice left.
It's a long shot, but I see no remaining alternatives to stop President Obama from winning re-election.
I'm not going to get into what I'll do if Romney wins the nomination. I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it. Right now, I want to focus on helping Gingrich as the last chance left to stop Romney.
A vote for Romney is, at best, a vote for more Supreme Court justices like David Souter and Sandra Day O'Connor. More realistically, a vote for Romney is a vote to re-elect Obama since I do not believe Romney can win, especially if large numbers of conservatives stay home or vote third-party.
I hope that prospect succeeds in scaring evangelical Protestants and conservative Roman Catholics into voting for Gingrich who, whatever else we can say about him, has an unquestioned record of being opposed to baby killing and Islamofascism.
Didn’t we pretty much go through this same scenario in 1999/2000 with W? We knew Bush was no conservative, but when push came to shove it was either Bush or Gore and we went with Bush.
There were some huge differences between GW & Romney.
1. GW was solidly pro-life.
2. GW was a veteran who had paid his dues and not avoided them during the Vietnam era.
3. GW had a solid, winning, smaller government record coming out of Texas.
4. GW was pro-gun, pro-natural family, and pro-God.
5. As it turns out, GW was a fighter who decided to take it to al-Qaeda (the right decision). Nation-building was a mis-step, but there was nothing immoral or unethical about it. Just bad policy.
We discovered GW’s penchant for illegal amnesty later and his penchant for rewarding friends with Scotus and AG positions. That is borderline unethical.
Darrell, my plan at this point is to support conservatives.
If Newt continues to run, I’ll support him until he drops out.
If my congressional candidate is a conservative, I’ll support him. If he isn’t, I’ll support any conservative opponent.
The Constitution Party would do well each year to become “the alternative party”. They should wait for their convention until after the candidates are clear and they should run opposition candidates where there isn’t a conservative, and they should endorse conservatives from other parties when there is a conservative alternative.
They are not large enough at this point to have the money to run extended campaigns, anyway. Also, not naming their candidates until late prevents huge-moneyed opposition from defining those people.
If the conservatives had the numbers we need, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.
Interesting list. Rick Perry was all those things and he was run out of town around here.
