Liberty Slipping: 10 Things You Could Do in 1975 That You Can't Do Now
Economic Policy Journal Blog ^ | July 22, 2013 | Robert Wenzel

In 1975:

1.You could buy an airline ticket and fly without ever showing an ID.

2.You could buy cough syrup without showing an ID.

3.You could buy and sell gold coins without showing an ID

4.You could buy a gun without showing an ID

5.You could pull as much cash out of your bank account without the bank filing a report with the government.

6.You could get a job without having to prove you were an American.

7.You could buy cigarettes without showing an ID

8.You could have a phone conversation without the government knowing who you called and who called you.

9. You could open a stock brokerage account without having to explain where the money came from.

10. You could open a Swiss bank account with ease. All Swiss banks were willing and happy to open accounts for Americans.

There are thousands of other examples. The monitoring is in place all that is required from here is the clampdown.

The differences, between now and 1975 in the business sector are even more prevalent. In recent years, in industry after industry regulations and prohibitions have been poured on top of free markets. It doesn't look like things will get any better in years to come. Eventually, the economy will suffocate and collapse, if this continues.

Yeah, not being able to open a swis bank account without jumping through hoops is a real pain.

Good list...but they were stretching on this one.

I would add that you could drink at 18, and generally make love without the possibility of a death sentence.

"6.You could get a job without having to prove you were an American."

We now have open borders as an excuse for a police state. Everyone is a suspect and has to show papers.

When I was a kid at that time we had migrant workers.
They came for seasonal work.
They camped, they committed no crimes and when the season was over they went home, taking their wages with them.
Lather rinse repeat.
Now they have more rights than you.
That is what has changed.

Conveying rights of American citizens and then some on Non citizens.

During the depression all gold was to be turned in to the Fed.

I don’t think minors could buy cigarettes in 1975.

My mom just wrote a note. The corner grocer knew her hand-writing.

4.You could buy a gun without showing an ID

Oversimplified. The 1968 Gun Control Act requires paperwork to buy a firearms from someone with an FFL, but not for a private transaction. Local gun laws aside, of course...this is hardly the case in NYC or Washington DC (or even Colorado as of this month).

Anybody can walk up to a vending machine...You got the money honey?

If you know where to "shop", you can buy nearly anything. It's getting harder to do as time goes by (harder meaning more $$$ required but the basic premise is still true)

that was when our currency was based on gold. it no longer is.

today, gold is personal property just like your car, jeans, bike or baseball glove. it’s yours to do with as you see fit.

exactly why would i need to provide an id to sell something i own??

Yes they could. I was sent to the store many times to get cigarettes for my parents. I was 14 in 1975.

Why should you pay the FFL to transfer property to your wife or child or brother as a gift?

Under the new Colorado law, that is exactly what you have to do...at $10 per gun plus whatever the FFL charges.
