Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said Friday that he opposes shutting down the government over defunding Obamacare.
I know that some people are discussing filibusters, but I actually think were at the point now where we cant shut down the government. Its like burning down the house to get rid of the mice or rats, said Cornyn, the number two Republican in the Senate.
I dont think very many think that a government shutdown is in the best interests of the economy and will actually accomplish the goal thats set out, said Cornyn.
Chief among those contemplating a filibuster is Cornyns Republican Texas colleague, Sen. Ted Cruz.
After the House Friday approved a continuing resolution stripped of funding for the Affordable Care Act, Cruz issued a statement saying: I hope that every Senate Republican will stand together and oppose cloture on the bill in order to keep the House bill intact and not let Harry Reid add Obamacare funding back in. Now is a time for party unity; Senate Republicans should stand side-by-side with courageous House Republicans.
The fight to save America from Obamacare is just beginning it may well go back and forth from the House and Senate several times and a united Republican front means that Harry Reid and the President cannot ignore the American people, Cruz said.
Asked how he saw the fight over the continuing resolution playing out, Cornyn said: The first vote will probably be on Wednesday. There will be some procedural votes and what I expect will happen is Sen. Reid will try to strip out the language to defund Obamacare and send it back to the House and, of course, the fiscal year ends on Monday (Sept. 30).

Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants... bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society. Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors. [but hes not in favor of amnesty, snicker, definition of is is]
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.
So I’m guessing this Senator is not up for reelection in 2014 and that he is confident that he can come back in 2-3 years and lie about what he did and did not support and everything will be okay?
Calls and emails......
How does defunding odumbocare “shut down” the entire gubmint?
This is nothing different that striking one line item from a budget, not rejecting the entire budget.
Where am I wrong?
100% correcto!!!! Make those calls/emails! We HAVE to win!
I guess Cornyn prefers to live in a rat-infested house
Hey Jon when rats win they don’t make good housemates
this traitor needs a primary opponent now .
this con helped ram thru amnesty in the senate in the back rooms while voting against it.
He thinks the economy needs the government, he should not be a Senator.
What is it with these a$$hats? The government does not equal the economy. What self righteous clowns!!
Actually, he IS up for re-election in 2014. So far, he has millions in a campaign account and has only drawn an unfunded llittle known challenger.
Unless he draws a better funded challenger, or his current challenger gets some traction in the funding arena, he’s starting to feel his oats that maybe he’s safe.
That’s a shame, because Cornyn right now is more vulnerable than Dewhurst was last year when Cruz beat him...
A great big bingo and amen!
Government shutdown has never been mentioned by anyone on the right as a strategy, only democrats have ACCUSED Republicans of wanting to shut down the government. Just one more use of the alinsky strategy in pursuit of total control.
Cornyn is the one Senate RINO coming up for reelection in 2014 that does not have a strong primary challenger. That is why he has been able to brazenly say up yours when Texans demanded he hold town hall meetings. Look at his Facebook page, he is taking a ton of heat for his gutless position stabbing Ted Cruz in the back, yet he is a shoo in for re-election because no one is opposing him. This is very sad, being Texas and all. Look at the damage McCain has done because we missed a chance to get rid of him. We are facing 6 more years of Cornyn if we can’t get someone to run against him.
At this point in time, were I a Texan, I would vote for the democrat just to oust Cornyn. If the Primary bum’s rush is denied us, vote for the rat.
I intend to do exactly that. Six years of a Democrat sitting in that seat and then working to get a Republican back in is better than a RINO like Cornyn being a lifer in that seat. I also think there is not much point in the Republicans winning the Senate as long as it would be ruled by Republicans like McConnell, Graham, McCain and Cornyn.
Cronyn doesn’t have a strong GOP primary challenger yet and time is running out to get one in place by the Dec. 9, 2013 filing deadline. There is Erick Wyatt from Rockport who announced earlier this year he was going to contest Cronyn but he is far from being a strong contender imo. There is also stuff out there about trying to get Rep. Louie Gohmert to challenge but I don’t know if that will come to be either.
Coryn is the poster child for people who go to Washington and turn in to something they were not or did not seem to be before. He is embarrassing and will be voted out of office.
Well, I certainly hope at least someone gets on the ticket. People like him need to be removed.
Cornyn tried to hide under Cruz’s cover for a bit, but his old friends the GOPe are now his main concern.
We need to get a good conservative capable of getting elected to go against Cornyn, and we don’t need to wait until next year to do it.
Too bad there’s a 2 year gap between Cornyn’s next election and when Perry would be free to run.
Something about your post looks strange. Are you sure you want to stick with that?
Cruz is in the Senate, not the House.
Cutting your nose off to spite your face is not a good ploy.
In the worst of times Cornyn is better than any dem.
