Book Review: Cottonwood, By Scott Phillips

It’s damn nice to be in the hands of an author who leaves nothing to chance. Who knows how to convey a thought that is deeper than the words he uses to convey it. Consider this sequence: “I couldn’t stand another of those damned prayer sessions without bursting out with the news that I’d been laying his wife so frequently that the only excitement left in it was the increasingly likely possibility that we’d be found out.” The other man, though, is kind and generous, and this quickly follows: “By the time I left I disliked Harding because he had treated me kindly and fairly, thereby failing to give me a reason to justify the wrong I had done him.” - See more at: http://www.claytonlindemuth.com/2013/09/28/review-of-cottonwood-by-scott-phillips/#sthash.0jcgYi1x.dpuf

This is an excerpt of my review of the novel Cottonwood, by Scott Phillips. It's historical fiction, and deals with the Bender family of 1870's Kansas, a clan that murdered dozens of men by bleeding them into a pit. A surprising novel, given the historical frame the author chose.

No hits for you!

Why not post the entire article, since it’s YOUR blog being excerpted.

Why do that?

Why excerpt your own material?

Colorful bunch those Benders.

I understand Scott is writing another novel dealing with the subject, but not exactly a sequel. I’ll have to ask. Had no idea he was the author who wrote the Ice Harvest, which was made into a movie a handful of years ago, with John Cusack and Billy Bob, I think.

So others can just read the article, rather than use more of their often limited allowed downloading allotment.

Basically, if you CAN upload the full article here, you should. It’s a courtesy to your fellow FReepers.

There are many sites I refuse to go to because they demand a click for every page of an article, or even split the article into two pages, with the second page only having one short concluding paragraph. It’s rude and self-serving.

Don, if you don’t want to follow the link, that’s great. If you think this through, though, the reason that other websites don’t want their entire articles copied is that it defeats the purpose of them creating the content to begin with—which is to attract visitors to their sites. And if you keep on thinking it through, you’ll see it doesn’t hurt sites like Free Republic, it helps them, as they become known for being the place to go find interesting stuff. So it boils down to this: you’re complaining because you skimped on how many megabytes you can download, and rather than accept the position you put yourself in, you’d rather accuse me of being rude and self serving. Have a great day, Don.

Sorry to burst another bubble, but I’m not limited in my bandwidth usage at work, at home, or on wifi.

Second (and third and fourth ad infinitum) clicks to (allow more ads and mindless videos to load and) read an article are a waste of time.

JMHO, YMMV

So you admit you are just using Free Republic as a free source of advertising.

“Colorful bunch those Benders.”

I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a WAG that Slim is being ironic rather than laudatory.

But, hey, the gunner is on the job, and I suspect your foray into “solicitations for the purposes of..etc” will be short-lived here.

Last I read the rules, I was in compliance. If you can refer to a policy somewhere, I’d be glad to review it. Long time ago it was easy to find, and posting in the Bloggers & Personal forum was okay. Do let me know if I’m wrong.

Thanks, it looks like another interesting author to discover. Sheesh, I’ve never before seen literary fiction promoted here!

Phillips is the best. And I’ve found over the years that there are pockets of literary readers on FR.

“Solicitations for the purpose of”?

Help me out. Cite a policy that I’ve violated. I’m happy to refrain in the future, if Free Republic wants less content.

Actually, I’m posting content that many in the community, being fairly like minded, might find interesting. I’m enriching the community who calls Free Republic home, and Free Republic at the same time. I’m still waiting for someone to cite a rule I’ve broken. Also, it’s interesting that you level the charge of using FR for free advertising, when your position is apparently that you and everyone should enjoy free content. You’re missing the tradeoff that makes Free Republic so cool a destination that it attracts hundreds of thousands of people. But I guess you have and opinion and an ass and you want to show both of them.

“Actually, I’m posting content”

No. You have not posted it. You have excerpted it.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/bloggers/2636843/posts?page=552#552

“I have no complaint if a good conservative blogger posts his own material to FR, not as an excerpt to drive hits and discussion back to his blog, but rather to impart useful information to OUR readers and to promote and join in on the discussion and conservative activism HERE on FR. ... But unless we say otherwise your blog material should be posted to our bloggers forum and it would be best if you do not excerpt your own material and if you would actually join in on the discussion here on FR. We’re not really that interested in driving OUR traffic to YOUR blog. But if our readers see that you post useful information then they might start reading your site and that’s fine by me.” ~ Jim Robinson

Great. You’ll see there’s no discussion on my blog, and that I’ve stuck around to have the discussion here. I’m happy to go away if Jim says so. Kind of pitiful, though.

Or not, since I won't help you steal traffic from Free Republic.

Kind of pitiful, though.

Yes, most blogs are. Likewise those who pimp them.

Steal traffic? Really? Do you think anyone follows a link he doesn’t want to follow? For content he doesn’t find interesting?

As soon as this thread is removed I’ll have my answer. I’ll leave it to the mods. Have a nice Sunday, humblegunner.
