Americans aren’t getting married, and researchers think porn is part of the problem

There could be an unlikely contributor to the decline of marriage in this country. And it's free pornography on the Internet.

A team of researchers, who published their findings in The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany, determined that the rise of free Internet pornography is not only correlated with a pronounced decline in percentage of young adult males who are married, but might actually be contributing to the trend.

"The results in this paper suggest that such an association exists, and that it is potentially quite large," the study notes.

The researchers used data from the General Social Survey (GSS), a comprehensive, nationally representative survey, to analyze how 18-to-35 year-old men used the Internet between 2000 and 2004. They focused on how many hours each participant spent on the Internet per week, and how many reported having used the Internet to view pornography in the past 30 days, but also observed other activities, including the use of religious websites.

"We asked ourselves, what is helping determine whether people are married or not?" said Dr. Michael Malcolm, a professor at the University of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and one of the study's authors. "One of those things, we thought, could be the use of pornography."

~snip~

The reason, Malcolm explains, is likely tied to the relationship between marriage and sexual gratification. If pornography is viewed as a means of alternative sexual gratification, then it could be undercutting the need for marriages to serve this function, at the very least during a younger age. Think of it as a milder form of premarital sex.

Agreed, although pornography is readily available in part due to its legalization from the 1950s onward and instant online access. This was not the case prior to 1960 or so, when it was an underground, illegal trade everywhere, although in a few places like New Orleans or New York, the laws were not strictly enforced.

The major contributor to the decline in marriage is a culture and a government that does not respect the institution that has existed since the Christianization of Europe. With divorce laws and child custody arrangements as they currently exist, there is no financial incentive and many disincentives for men to get married. The feminist ideology is especially poisonous, as is the radical egalitarianism that pervades American and other Western societies.

Conservatives have gone down the same slippery slope as the rest of society. In the 2010s, conservatives who support equality of opportunity are to the left of 1930s socialists who advocated "living wages" for heads of households, who were overwhelmingly male. Twenty years ago, the thought of women in combat roles was anathema. Today, it is barely questioned, even in front line positions and on submarines.

No recovery will occur until such time as conservatives become true to their name, look at the longer time rather than the next election cycle, and stop advocating the positions of liberals 20 to 50 years ago.

...pronounced decline in percentage of young adult males who are married...

Well if the women are still getting married and the men aren't, I think I've discovered the real problem.

It’s called MGTOW. Pornography isn’t what’s causing it.

More men are getting sick of being suckers for women, and are checking out.

A young man meets women in a couple places. One, church, the other, school. The church attender will most likely get married but they are a dwindling breed. A young man on college campus would be an absolute fool to even acknowledge a young woman on campus. They have criminalized being a man. The young men are confused and socially awkward and find their cravings for companionship through internet games and ravings for sex through porn. Who can blame them?

We have a lower income culture under Obama.
They stay single to avoid Obamacare fines and to have all non-workers on social programs.

You nailed it.

I would include "unsuccessful" males, as well.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that the husband typically gets the shaft in a divorce proceeding.

And I say that with no personal bias; I've been happily married for over 35 years.

But, I've seen many others who haven't been nearly as fortunate.

Ask your friends and relatives to give you a definition of a successful life. Divorce has scared all of us. We have taught our daughters to make money before worrying about getting married.

If anything, things like porn, drugs and alcohol use/abuse are more likely symptoms of a greater problem with what marriage has become, rather than being the problem or its cause or even a significant contributor.

Personally, I'd love to be married, but fear of pain, along with my aversion to divorce, lawyers and the high price of "I do" then followed by "I don't", have kept me single, maybe even past my "Best before _____" date.

Less damage all around this way.

Porn doesn’t make sense as a major factor. If a guy wants sex, why watch or read porn when the real thing is available everywhere.

And WHY is "the real thing is available everywhere"?

Because of porn. Since the introduction of the internet - its a safe bet that most children under 10 have inadvertently viewed hard-core porn and it affected them. Porn is now a part of our culture. Its the reason why the casual sex culture has thrived. Porn is why rapes are up.

And porn is to some degree is why marriages are down.

Well you may be right. They can’t afford to get married or maybe they all have their own jobs and pay their own way in life and don’t feel motivated to get married. But maybe I’m naïve and I just don’t get it but how would watching porn keep you from wanting to get married?

Remember when a woman over 30 who wasn’t married was called an “Old Maid”?

The stigma of being unmarried went away a long time ago.
