General Robert E. Lee should be a Role Model for American youth
Canada Free Press ^ | 01/18/15 | James King

Lee possessed every virtue of other great commanders without their vices. He was a foe without hate; a friend without treachery; a victor without oppression, and a victim without murmuring.

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower believed that Confederate General Robert E. Lee should be a Role Model for American youth and they should emulate his qualities.

Robert Edward Lee was born January 19, 1807 to Revolutionary War hero Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee III and Anne Carter Lee at Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County Virginia. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated 2nd in the class of 1829 without a single demerit. Lee served in the U.S. Army for nearly 32 years.

At the beginning of the War Between the States (Civil War) he was offered command of the U.S. Army by Abraham Lincoln. He knew that Lincoln’s invasion of the Southern States was unconstitutional, illegal, immoral, and criminal. He had to make a choice to either defend the Constitution or the Union. He made the correct decision to defend the Constitution.

Lee was a fine man but is less a moral exemplar than an example of the tragedy of a good man in a bad and foolish cause. Casting the Confederacy as a noble defense of the Constitution deliberately misses the point that the South went to war to protect slavery. Instead of secession and war, the South would have been best served by remaining in the Union and bargaining for a compensated emancipation on favorable terms. Out of pride and ambition though, the South saw secession as a way to forge a new nation to protect and extend slavery.

but in actuality the Confederacy was a Police State.

And the Union wasn't 1861-1865? You really need to read some historical text about Lincoln's suspension of constitutional rights during that time period.

A far greater Virginia General

He not only never lost a battle in which he was in charge, but in those battles he completely annihilated the enemy.

Considering: (1) He lead in only 8 battles (2) His entire CW career was in the Western Theater (3) 90% of Confederate resources were in Eastern theatre.

You know, if the New York Yankees played my local high school team 8 times, they'd win 8 times. Calling a general better than Lee is laughable considering he never met the likes of Lee, Jackson, Longstreet etc.

This thread has become a revisionist love fest.

Looking at some of the responses, it is easy to see the shallowness of modern Americans.

The civil war was a moral struggle in two parts. In the beginning, the South had the moral high ground with States Rights. After the emancipation proclamation, the north had the high ground of individual/human rights. The real tragedy of the war was that one side had to lose. Our Constitution was irrevocably damaged, and we can see the results today.

You’re not bright enough to know your own agenda much less anyone else’s. Go sit in the corner.

Robert E. Lee was great at forming defensive lines, and counterpunching, but never won an offensive battle. Antietam and Gettysburg were both miserable failures on his part.

George Thomas never led bigger groups than what he did because the Ohio cabal of politicians and generals wanted their own State to get all the glory and Thomas was from Virginia, Thomas never wanted publicity or glory for himself, and he refused to allow himself to get promoted over someone senior to him. He was nicknamed "Slow Trot" because of his deliberate method. Others thought him "slow". However, once his plan was put into action he was fast as a Whippet.

Also, he pretty much saved the Western Theater at Chickamauga when his Corps staved off the Rebel advance...hence, "The Rock of Chickamauga".

Name comes from a funny true story. Involving a desert, and a rhinoceros. You soft lipped bottom feeding, mud eating trash fish.

Lincoln saved the union from people who were willing to tear it apart so they could keep human slaves.

Friends, neighbors, countrymen!

Can’t we all just move to the moderate middle in order to “get things done”?

Civil War only lasted 4 years, but CW threads have been a FR mainstay even back to my lurkin’ days back in the late ‘90’s. Some of the real spirited ones have passed a 1000 posts.

I would question “The South had the moral high ground with States Rights. It was the Southern States that begged and pleaded with the Buchanan Administration to use the Army if necessary to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act in some Northern States. To join the Confederacy, you had to make slavery legal, your citizens could not decide they did not want slavery, then join the Confederacy. In 1862, the Confederate Government gave itself the authority to enter the sovereign states of the Confederacy and seize your citizens for service the Confederate Army. Also in 1862, regardless of what term of service you enlisted for in your state militia, the Confederate Government voided that contract, and your new term of service was at the pleasure of the Confederate Government. The Confederate Government ordered its respective states to not ship the 1862 cotton crop to buyers in Europe. These actions are hardly the States Rights moral high ground.

How could Lee know that, considering on April 18 Lincoln hadn't invaded anything?

Really? Lee himself said he turned it down b/c he wouldn't be able to fight against fellow Virginians.
