Why Is the US Military Rationing Meals? They Have a $770 Billion Budget. What’s Going On?

The US Military is rationing food on at least one huge aircraft carrier. Why is this happening? Doesn’t the military receive hundreds of billions of dollars each year? Where is the money going?

This Memorial week we received information that the men and women on US aircraft carrier, the USS Harry Truman, are receiving food rations. This makes no sense.

The USS Harry Truman is not at war. It is not in harm’s way. It is in the Mediterranean Sea near the conflict in Ukraine but not in the Black Sea.

Around 5,000 personnel are on board this huge carrier. Reports are coming out that the ship is rationing food. Why is our military doing this? It makes no sense. They are only receiving two meals a day.

Food rations and rationing food is two different things.

Not one government entity is ever held accountable for failure. Zippo. The rot goes deep into every bureaucracy, including the military.

Military “rations” have a limited shelf life. It is better to consume them than it is to discard them. As they are consumed they will be replaced with fresh stock with years of shelf life remaining.

It is likely that the sudden withdrawl from Afghanistan created a massive surplus of field rations that will need to be consumed.

This is nothing unusual. The answer is to quit complaining and just chow down.

Cigarettes and gasoline in the 1990s... I used to use my wife’s card for extra smokes.

I quit in 2004.

If this is true, maybe the Department of the Navy has a large amount of MRE’s that are nearing the end of their shelf life and are using them rather then disposing of them.

Americans have, by far, the most expensive and least productive government in the world for what it spends.
Its all supported by printed money and massive debt (for now anyway)

And the DoD is the most bloated of all government bureaucracies.

I’m wondering if they are having a fuel problem for supply ships and support aircraft. The Navy works with the Merchant Marine for supplies. You can’t miss those USNS ships with their stacks painted haze grey\blue\yellow. If the Truman can’t make port, and the supply ships are forced to cut back on operations due to fuel cost/availability, that might explain some of the issues. Of course, those issues are a direct result of the morons in charge right now, and their party.

Another question I would ask, is the status of JP5 (AVGAS)? Is there a shortened supply and they are saving it for the CAP and the fighters\ASW aircraft? That would mean that they would have trouble using the H-46 Helo’s to pick up and drop supply bundles from the USNS ship, to the Fantail of the Truman. All plausible issues, but all directly attributed to policies and actions of the morons in charge in D.C.

Just my thoughts, with plenty of sea time under my belt and having worked my fair share of UNREP’s and the related commissary working parties. I was a fleet sailor before cross rating into the Bee’s.

A reasoned thought on the situation from the article.

Store shelves have gradually been getting more and more empty.

Are they not getting underway replenishments? If not, why not?

Are they getting replenishments but insufficient food being supplied?

If they’re getting replenished inadequately, are there other classes of supply that are also being shortfalled, like jet fuel?

Is this just the Truman or is it the entire Truman Battle Group?

I wish Hoft would’ve asked a few more questions before posting this.

Biden is the Commander in Chief, so ultimately it’s his fault...but it would’ve been nice to know a little more....

Logistics snafu. Someone probably fat fingered 1 pallet instead of 10.

I was reading an autobiography of some Navy guy, it was a long time ago but I think it was probably somebody like Nimitz or Mitscher. Right before the US got involved in WWII or maybe right around Dec 7th '41 anyway, he steamed into the main port in Brazil in his battleship and purchased the entire coffee crop for the year and loaded it up. Maybe he brought more ships, too. iI guess the idea was, it was going to be a long war, and the US wasn't going to do it without coffee. Luckily coffee was one of the few items in America that wasn't rationed - at least not for very long anyway. When it was rationed, it was one (1) pound per 35 days. Cigarettes weren't rationed, but they were impossible to get stateside I've heard. Ten bucks say GIs probably mailed them home?

Rations such as MREs are 2x daily.

I never saw or had to eat an MRE on a deployed carrier.

A long time ago, I was on a Navy base for a 5-day “Navy Science Cruise”, an award given at a state science fair.

The food—on shipboard and at the base—was super-abundant. I gained weight that I did not need. The Naval personnel of course worked harder, and needed every bit of that food.

What happened to all the abundant Navy food? Is this yet another biden fail? PHOOEY to biden and his scurvy crew!!!!
