For the third year in a row, Max is the nation's most popular pet name, based on an analysis of VPI's 360,000 pet insurance policies.
"Many pet owners consider their pets to be members of their family. As such, they give them human names like Max, Molly or Maggie, which underscores the fact that the human-animal bond is stronger than ever," says Dr. Carol McConnell, manager of veterinary education and services for VPI. "New pet owners should spend quality time with their pets, especially in the first week, to establish daily patterns of behavior and to recognize unique traits in the pet that translate into a name, such as 'Happy' or 'Diva'."
Other suggestions for naming a new pet, says Dr. McConnell, include selecting a name that is short and easy to pronounce, and to be careful not to choose a name that is too similar to a command, such as Neil or Joe, which might be confused with "heal" or "no."

I would vote for your choice. Pugs, not sure why they were placed on this earth.
I have a cute little calico named Maci. And a big 15-pound tuxedo cat named Betty - short for Betty Crocker - she goes crazy in the kitchen!
We also have a female pure bread Chow-Chow. We named her Lacey Brooke. She loves me more than any dog I have ever owned and vice versa.
OBTW, Our dogs are not pets, they are members of our family. Actually I think they believe they own us!
We had a black cat named Cujo, cat from Hell. He was one weird guy. He used to chew on himself daily, screaming with pain, then attacking himself in the nether regions again. He eventually died.
Now we have Tiger Lily Cat, Big Frank (cat) and a beagle named Rosebud. And they are as "normal" as Cujo wasn't. It's nice for all our pets to get along and not worry about being sliced and diced by the evil black cat...
However, Hubby has known a few pugs in his life, and just thinks they are super sweet. And I know my 100 lb Lab would love to have a permanent puppy.
And if you DO get barn cats, you had better take good care of them, or I will hunt you down like a field mouse. Cats are the greatest thing on the planet.
I say the same thing about men! Isn't life funny.

Calling her Cleo for short would be fine.

Actually, the name Rosebud fits her to a T...She is a sweet little girl beagle and was born on the 4th of July. Our son, who was 13 at the time, thought that was the name of a firecracher and he was the one who named her. We found later out the name was from a matchbook, but it was perfect for her and the name stuck. She is the sweetest little dog. She's 11-1/2 years old now and is still our little sweetie (besides being a beagle, which means barking, baying and getting herself sick eating things she's not supposed to.) The name fits her perfectly. We'll miss her dearly when she's gone.
On the other hand, Newfies drool. Gallons and gallons and gallons of drool. My first trainer had a Newfie named Kansas. Adorable girl though as big as a small pony, but if you stood next to her she would fill your shoes with saliva. When my puppy was naughty with the other dogs while boarding, she figured out pretty quick that she could hide under Kansas, be concealed by her belly hair, and Kansas wouldn't let any of the dogs she had been pestering get near her . . .
I love huge dogs, and many of the giant breeds don't live very long. That's why I like Newfies and St Bernards. They live a pretty long time, as far as the big breeds go. I know they drool, but they are so fricking big it's worth it!
My favorite breed is a Collie, though.
Thank you! He's really a great cat, he has a very outgoing, doglike personality and he's absolutely fearless. He's the Big Boss of the menagerie, too.

She's 42 pounds, will be 5 on March 1.
She isn't a very calm dog either! We got into agility in self defense, to try to burn off some of that energy.
. . . you can see she is a little thing, only 20" at the shoulder, but boy can she hit those weave poles!
