Did anyone see the Homerun Derby at Yankee Stadium last night? As a Mets fan I usually only watch National League teams, so I had only heard about Josh Hamilton's story and haven't really seen him in action. This guy is a beast though. I have never seen a display of power like the one he put on last night. And just think that he did it, and is in the middle of this incredible season he is having, after missing 3 full years and practically no time in the minors. Unbelieveable. The real life version of The Natural.
Only he lost to Morneau in the finals. A real collapse of concentration
He was amazing but like a guy in his first HR Derby, you don’t shoot the wad in the first round.
As soon as he was at 10 you stop and save yoru strength. He is a big guy and he was pounding the ball.
I don’t think you can fault him for that. It is pretty common for someone who has such a big first round to be exhausted by the finals. Remember, he spent nearly an hour hitting 500 foot bombs in the first round alone. That would wear out anybody.
Yes, I did, Hamilton was awesome in that first round performance.
Did you hear Chris Berman's slap at Nancy Reagan during his at bat?
By now we all know the story: star athlete to Millionaire to drugged out waste, finds God and sobriety and returns to MLB.
Berman said(paraphrased): 'This is not Nancy Reagan territory, this is reality.'
What cheap comment.
Yeah, I heard that. Chris Berman is an idiot though and NO ONE takes him seriously about anything.
When the telecast first started Berman was on the PA at the Stadium and encouraged the fans to give a big “Bronx cheer” to the HR Derby contestants, apparently completely ignorant to the fact that a Bronx cheer is incessant booing. He is a tool.
Wasn’t it Morneau who complained last year of the Homerun Derby throwing off his timing causing lower production in the second half? Surprised he competed this year...I’m sure Twins fans might question his thinking also, win or lose.
A few years ago I owned David Wright in my fantasy league. Wright did well in the HR derby and proceeded to hit 4 the rest of the year. The derby screwed up his swing, he did not seem to go to right the remainder of the year.
This year I own Morneau AND Hamilton. I’m looking to trade them both.
He lost.
Yeah, made no sense consdidering the work Nancy Reagan has done with AIDS and chemical dependency etc.
Lack of concentration?
That dude was hitting 500 foot homers last night!!!! He hit 28 in the first round. He was tired.
You heard wrong. It was uber-liberal Peter Gammons who made the comment. Combine that idiotic statement with uber-liberal Reilly playing the race card and the hype and moronic nature of Krukky, Phillips and Morgan and the broadcast was painful.
I guess it can happen, but I wouldn’t say that it is a foregone conclusion that they will do poorly after the Derby. As a Met fan I remember Wright doing very well in the Derby in 2006 and then going on to struggle with his power very badly in the second half of the season. However, Wright finished second in the Derby that year to Ryan Howard who, if I remember, did extremely well in the second half.
I think it may have had to do with the fact that Wright, although he has power and is certainly capable of hitting 35 HRs a season, is not a “power hitter”, whereas Howard is. Morneau, like Wright, can hit for power but is also not your typical power hitter, Hamilton is. I would hold on to Hamilton if I were you.
He might have lost the contest but listening to him talk about his life and who he is today he’s certainly no loser.
The leftists did a lot of disservice to what Mrs. Reagan was trying to do. She told kids to “Just say no” when someone tried to offer them drugs. She provided a lot of context to that statement as well. It is the same message I will offer in my house.
Exactly. Wright altered his swing for the derby, Howard didn’t have to. Wright was affected, Howard wasn’t.
The thing about Hamilton is he is a little fragile. Add that to the fact that I have all the power I need but am in the lower tier in WHIP and ERA. I have Ortiz coming back too.
I think Hamilton is going to be fine. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders now and appears to realize just how lucky he is. I don’t think you would have anything to worry about if you kept him.
Was he the one who said something like "Eight white guys in this competition. It looks like a Kiwanis meeting"? Who is he?
Rick Reilly just joined ESPN after years at Sports Illustrated.
