Bylaw to stop dogs from chasing squirrels, seagulls [Canada]
Coast Reporter ^ | December 24,2009 | Jenny Wagler

Sechelt dogs that "without provocation" chase any animal — be it a rat, squirrel, seagull, bear or cougar — would violate a dog licensing and control amendment bylaw that passed three readings at the Dec. 16 council meeting.

The first draft of the bylaw, prepared by District of Sechelt staff, would only have stopped dogs from chasing, biting or attacking domesticated animals. But at committee of the whole Dec. 9, Coun. Keith Thirkell suggested expanding the bylaw to include wild animals and birds as well. Thirkell argued that this would bring it in line with provincial and federal legislation that protects various wild animals, including migratory birds and endangered species.

I learned that urban and rural people generally don’t make good couples.

The problem of what to do with dog feces has been discovered. Just pass a law saying they cannot take a dump.

One law makes as much sense as the other.

Oh, it’s that easy? Well then, we better expect a Canadian law against the earth’s warming — the earth will be incarcerated if it warms any further. And the oceans shouldn’t beat against some of the shores on penalty of a huge fine. And what about that silly sun, making the days longer and shorter. It’s awful and causes a lot of confusion and almanac difficulties, so the penalties for that should be severe. The sun and the earth will soon be doing time along with that pesky ocean. What’s next? The moon?

"If you look at it from practical terms, it's highly unlikely our bylaw enforcement officer would be as concerned with something occurring on somebody's private property, because there's a good chance nobody would be complaining about it,"

IOW the law is intended to be enforced selectively and politically.

What does "without provocation" mean? Most dogs consider any movement to be provocation to chase, so I suppose the law needs to be amemded to say, "without reasonable provocation." The term reasonable will also need to be defined as it applies to dogs. Again we either run into the problem of defining what dogs find reasonable, or prosecute dog owners when their pets don't reason on a human level. Local defense attorneys must be salivating.

‘Bout to take my dogs for their morning walk and run in the fields, I expect they would be in violation of this law if we lived in Stupidville. They always chase birds, but unless I blow the winged rats out of the sky they can't catch them. Birds can fly dogs can't ya know. As for squirrels, my dogs don't climb pine tress. Very frustrating for the mutts. However, they can catch liberals so I think I'll be working on training them to do that. The day when we “start hunting politicians with dogs” is coming and I want to be ready.

In the 19th century, Indiana almost passed a law declaring Pi = 3. So much stoopid in the world...

Why not outlaw rainy days and Mondays!

Then we’ll create quality schools where all children are above average.

The very same people that think they can influence the natural cycle of global warming/cooling are now attempting to change the natural & HARMLESS urges of a dog.

Perhaps the dog chases actually help the animals stay “on their toes” to avoid becoming real prey to real predators. If dogs stop this behavior, these animals may become complacent to predators. Or maybe the animals actually like to be chased. Can anyone prove they don't like it?

(Yes, I realize this is all lunacy, so why not argue like a lunatic, a language the stupid left understands).

Beyond that, if my dog scares off a bear, cougar, or other dangerous animal on my property, then he is a hero, not a criminal. And if he succeeds in killing rats or mice, then he is doing a service to the community. Do these idiots not know that VERMIN carry diseases? Do they not know that the Plague was spread by the fleas on the rats?

What is missing here are the real killers - cats. MY dog has never been successful catching a bird or squirrel, but my cat has brought home NUMEROUS birds, squirrels, rats, snakes, mice, & moles - many still very much alive. Last year the cat brought home a huge, live rat. He brought him in the dining room, let him go, & watched in amusement as we frantically tried to catch the filthy thing.

This law will be nothing more than a revenue enhancer for lawyers. Most new laws nowadays are the same.

Actually, there was a bill introduced into the legislature in the late 1800’s to make PI (at least in Indiana) equal to the sum of a particular finite algebraic series, by law. (PI is a “transcendental” number, meaning it cannot be expressed exactly as the sum of any finite series, nor via finite series of algebraic operations, root taking, etc.) The value of the series wasn’t even particularly close to pi. There are lots “circle squaring” finite expressions for pi, this one wasn’t ever particularly good.

The advantage of such a law to the people of Indiana was dubious at best.

In the event the law died in committee and was never voted on.

In modern times, it has been determined that Chuck Norris can express pi exactly in an algebraic series containing only four terms. He’s working on reducing it to three.

God asks Chuck Norris for help with math homework.
