Ok, I am from NJ. Between the high taxes, strict gun laws and crazy liberals I am seriously thinking about moving... have been thinking this for quite some time. Right now I have three children and have to pay for private schooling for all three because the public school's agenda's here are disingenuous and horrible. I want to make sure I do not go from the frying pan into the fire. I have a few choices for job transfers to NC, TX and OH. I need to be in a good area as I have a Neurological disorder and need an area with good doctors. However, I want to look at a state that will not give into any FEDERAL PRESSURE regardless (Are there any states left?). Looking for good infrastructure, few unions, decent schools (or good private schools), friendly gun laws and good hospitals. I guess what I am looking for is a a state that will stick to Constitutional principals regardless of what happens.
I think Southwest Utah is a better choice.

Shhh! Don’t say Texas. We’ve already got far too many wacky liberal northerners moving in down here and trying to take over. It’s a toss up which is worse, the RAT yankees or the La Raza chanting illegals.
I moved to TX 3 years ago and I have no desire to move out of this great state....so we welcome y’all....

We spent a whole month wandering around Texas and our views have changed. The decision would become, what part of Texas do we move to.
Freepers would do well to study the revolt of the Texicans against the new government of Santa Ana. In the present context the people of the Alamo and of Goliad and of San Jacinto provide a better model of revolution against tyranny than the original revolt against England

Texas or Florida. I’m in Texas (south of the Houston Metro area), and probably going to retire in Florida Panhandle, or Puerto Rico.
South Carolina ticked me off when I went into the military years ago. They jacked me on my taxes so I had to fight it (I won), but then I relocated with the military and chose a new state. I was fine to pay my income tax to SC until they screwed with me and then I found a more friendly state that didn’t have income taxes either.
My gain their loss.
One thing I really hate about NC and SC. The red clay mud...and their crappy pine trees. Well that’s two things but they go together in my mind.
I lived in Texas for 20 years (Houston area). Houston will meet all your requirements; no personal state income tax, good schools, great med center, very affordable housing.
Check it out. I’m only in the DC area because of a divorce. I’d move back in a nanosecond.
Interesting that the smaller towns in western NC seem to have higher than national average violent crime.

My take is that Asheville has become hippie / trustfundian central for the SE U.S.

We enjoy our Yankees when they move into Texas. You’ll make a lot of friends quickly, guaranteed.
The comments about Durham are spot on... the Tom Wolfe novel I Am Charlotte Simmons was based on his niece's experiences at Duke University (although the city and university are given fictional names). In the book, the characters refer to Durham as the City of God. (ie, the impoverished ghettos of Rio de Janeiro.)
I also lived in Chapel Hill for a short while. I loved Chapel Hill, but didn't have the money at the time to really live well there. There are specific types of people in Chapel Hill: those affiliated with the university (students, professors or administrators - read "liberals"); the PhDs who work in RTP (read "rich liberals"); and those who are there for the music (read: "poor, stoned liberals"). But if you are into indie music, it's one of the best places in the country to start a band. Doesn't sound like you are though ;-)
I moved to California, hated it, and then to Arizona, which I love. It's not on your list, though.
I live in Northwest Houston in the suburbs and you can’t beat it. We have outstanding medical centers downtown that people from all over the world come to visit. We have no state income tax. The laws down here are friendly to gun owners and of course, it’s a die-hard red state. My son currently attends a public school here and is reading Huck Finn in his 8th grade class. We have no teacher unions. We did have him in private school as well for K-5th grade... both options are available and top notch.
I would avoid Austin, although the weather is nice, it is a liberal college town. I visit my mother-in-law there once every few months and it’s absolute torture.
And as for the comments about us hating Yankees down here... not true (I was one when I moved down here). What we don’t like is people coming here and trying to tell us how to live and trying to change us. If you don’t like our way of life down here... get out.

What a beautiful place. I went to Girl Scout camp there every summer for almost 10 years. Being a young person, I wasn’t worried about politics, but I gather the area is in a conservative part of the state?
