"Whither the jihadi forums?"

SNIPPET: "There are currently only three jihadi forums that are sufficiently active and well-connected to be of any interest whatsoever. Why we claim to be on the verge of defeating al-Qaida while simultaneously watching passively as they use these forums to regroup and regenerate is beyond me.

These are the forums three:

• al-Fidaa, a forum created by al-Qaida core. That it is directly linked to al-Qaida by definition moves it to the top of the list. Current membership: 2,462, all of whom can be considered "active" if only because they just joined the forum.

• al-Shmukh, a forum with a long history that includes connections al-Qaida core. Current membership: 14,327.

• Ansar al-Mujahideen Arabic Forum, which was stood up with the assistance of at least one individual with bona fide connections to al-Qaida core. Current membership: about 10,000.

Some conclusions and some speculation:

1. There are far fewer jihadi activists on the Arabic forums than there used to be. With each round of shutdowns a portion of the membership never comes back (they had probably already become inactive).

2. A portion of the jihadi community globally bypasses the forums entirely, and instead relies on Facebook and Youtube. This seems particularly true of Western jihadis, the HVEs.

SNIPPET: “An internet jihadist has issued an assassination threat against late-night host David Letterman.

The threat was made by a frequent poster on a site where Al Qaeda messages often appear first online in the US, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The individual apparently took offense at a joke made by Letterman on his CBS talkshow, in which the comedian made light of the death of accused terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri.

The online commenter wrote: “Is there not amongst you a Sayyid Nosair al-Masri (may Allah release him) to cut the tongue of this lowly Jew and shut it forever.

“He showed his evil nature and deep hatred for Islam and Muslims, and said that Ilyas Kashmiri was killed and he joined bin Laden. We ask Allah to paralyze his tongue and grant the sincere monotheists his neck.””
