California Freepers (Vanity)

Sigh...to make a long story short, my wife has decided that she's getting out of Texas, with or without me.

She's listed California, Oregon and Washington as possible places where she'd like to relocate. Well, I'm allergic to the cold, so that leaves California.

Any input on possible locations in California where she can "Escape the redneck mentality" and I can still live around semi-sane individuals?

Funny how some rednecks (of which I am a member) get all ruffled when someone speaks of their "mentality," and then when you ask them what a redneck actually is, they reply (in different words), "it's a mentality."

Another vote here for North San Diego County.
Encinitas
Carlsbad
Leucadia

PS, I have a 3.5 bedroom/2.5 bath house for sale in Vista.

Btw, even with the collapse of house values in California, be prepared for some sticker shock for housing prices.

Oh, and wicked state income tax, 10% sales tax, and at least $.50 more per gallon for gas than what you're paying in TX.

Just sayin'.

Move your wife to Austin...tell her it’s CA. She won’t be able to tell the difference.

North San Diego County or South Orange County (Laguna Niguel or Mission Viejo — Mission Viejo is one of the country’s safest cities). Ladera Ranch is OK if you don’t mind sitting on your fence and almost being able to touch your neighbor’s house. Rancho Santa Margarita ... well, it’s nice too, but I think a couple of the “Real Housewives” (yeah, right) come from there.

A serious reply:

If you don’t need to find a cutting-edge high tech job (well ok, or any job), I’d sincerely suggest looking somewhere between the towns of Ventura or Santa Barbara, up to Morro Bay. Or just inland from Santa Barbara up to Ojai.

The central coast.

It’s the California you think about from postcards, and movie scenery. Absolutely stunning scenery. Fabulous weather. Wide open spaces. Seascapes lifted right out off a postcard.

Not much work though. Unless you farm. Or somehow attract tourists. When you get to what’s really considered the central coast, you’re just about a day out from (both) of the mega-cities - right in between them.

Not a whole lot of people stop and stay there, because for the most part they’re going from one, to the other.

The fact it’s not metropolitan though, keeps the weird factor to a minimum.

Move towards Nevada area. Big mix, you should be on comfortable terms with your wife, there.

If I was you, I’d pull a fast one on her and suggest somewhere in far E. WA or far E. OR. There are some AWESOMELY redneck towns there. But don’t tell her ;)

Is it possible that she would consider one of the liberal big cities within Texas? Dallas? Austin? San Antonio?

If you like country living, check out the area south of sacramento and north of stockton. Very quiet, most folks are friendly, and some nice parcels with and without dwellings with the real estate depressed as it is.

Pretty much any recreational activity is close, weather is perfect about 50 weeks out of the year, cold one week in january, and stifling hot without wind in august sometime, otherwise, very comfortable.Fishing is superb, multiple lakes, rivers and the oceaqn is 80 minutes away.

Downside? Got to have a iron jaw, what with all the clenching of teeth, the entire state is controlled by liberal assholes.

So, if you have a good income stream, you will need to protect it, because they will smell it as soon as you cross the arizona cali border.

I’d educate her on the difference between a Bubba, and a Redneck.

A bubba sits around shooting his mouth off, acting like an inbred idiot.

A redneck is a hard working, church going, family oriented man who works out in the sun, hence the word red neck.

I am proud to say every man in my family is a red neck, the women would have killed a Bubba ;)

Thank you for the first and (so far) only constructive comment. I’ll check those out.

All I can say about some of the other comments is that marriage obviously means little to some. I’m not thrilled about this, but I love my wife a helluva lot more than I love Texas.

Sorry, but you are a fool. You'll make the the move, she still won't be happy, and she'll leave you for someone whom she thinks is more 'refined'.

"Redneck mentality" vs. "Semi-sane individuals"?! You've framed the arguement right there, and haven't even noticed.

Save yourself the upheaveal, pain, money and time. Gently take her by the shoulders, point her towards California, and plant your boot in her ass.

I know this sounds harsh, but its the truth. I've seen this play out too many times, and it always ends the same way.

If you go ahead with this; I expect you to remember this post, and come back and tell me you wished you'd followed my advice.
(C'mon, the small, cruel pleasures are all some of us have.)

She’s not going to be happy no matter where you go. California has serious political, social and economic problems and they are going to get much worse. It’s going to get violent there because business is going under and moving out. The State lost 22% of it’s tax income this year. A lot of people are in the wagon and the horses are fleeing the State. When the wagon doesn’t move the “progress” people riot, steal and murder.

Why is she treating you like a stray dog - do what I want or I’m leaving you? That sounds seriously imbalanced and abusive. My happiness is totally tied to where my husband is. He’s my best friend. Even in liberal states I found rednecks to hang with! I have lived all over the country and I find good people to befriend so that is why it sounds unstable to me. Liberals (amoral nitwits) and American-Americans(rednecks) are everywhere.

Tell her to move out and if she’s not happy, she can move back with you. Does she do this “my way or the highway” with everything?

God Bless you and good luck, Melas. Take care of yourself.

Nope, first time, and to be honest it's her turn. We moved to Dallas because I couldn't live another day in rural Texas where we moved to in the 90's.
