Rare photo of lynx using Banff highway overpass delights wildlife experts
CalgaryHerald via EdmontonJournal ^ | Valerie Fortney,

He weighs in at up to 14 kilograms, but thanks to his enormous feet shaped almost like snowshoes, looks as though he is floating on air as he ambles along the snow.

His legs are long and powerful, his coat is thick and grey, and the patches of fur that frame his face look like the kind of beard sported by aristocrats.

I think its a cool idea as long as I don’t have to pay for it. The cost of teaching all those animals to read must be enormous.

A number of years ago on one of my pheasant hunting trips to N.W. Kansas, we encountered an early snowfall one night. The next day, while hunting along a section of railroad tracks, I came across the tracks of a bobcat that was actually walking along one of the rails for at least a quarter of a mile......then it broke off and went into the woods. That was cool......

If that photo of the wildlife overpass is accurate then I have no problem with their construction. The alternative of course would be vehicular collisions equaling what is happening here in Michigan.

I think we need to allow more deer permits and maybe even give the out of state crowd a break on the cost.

There are several of those wildlife bridge corridors on the highway. The wildlife, elk, moose, you name it are funneled
with high fencing to the bridges. Before they were built, you took you life in your hands driving that road.

“If that photo of the wildlife overpass is accurate then I have no problem with their construction.”

From the article: “Its hefty price tag — wildlife mitigation measures are estimated to account for nearly one-third of the $310-million cost of the Trans-Canada Highway twinning project from Castle Junction to the B.C. border alone”.

I have problems, cash problems with such problems. Sell hunting permits until the herds are thinned. Tax reduction and fee bonanza.

Hundred Million Dollar Photo - nauseating!

I don't think the permits are an issue since I know several guys who couldn't fill the ones they had.

Most of the deer/vehicle accidents that are occuring here in Michigan are in the most densely populated areas where the deer live in the pockets of wooded areas that cant be hunted safely.

My sub is a typical example, on the southeast side of it is a wooded area that is only about a tenth of a mile on each side and on the east side is another condo complex, on the west side is a hospital and the south side is M-59 which is an eight lane highway.

A year ago there was a small herd of approx. 8 deer as witnessed by my neighbors who saw them standing in the field between the woods and the hospital. Since then, I've seen one carcass on M-59 and another one in March on the two lane highway on the extreme east side.

And as a side note, in February, a friend of mine who lives about a mile and a half east of me in another sub, his wife hit an 8 point buck while driving past a golf course a mile south of his house......

Another friend of mine lives in Sterling Heights and he has a big buck coming into his backyard from a wooded area behind him almost daily.......

It's crazy, these damn things are growing in numbers in areas that defy the imagination.......

True, I know of a few places around the outskirts of Jackson where you are guaranteed to see large herds of deer.

Here in CT we have overpasses to no where .... millions of dollars wasted by the DOT....the most famous one is called *The Stack* in Farmington, west of Hartford on the I-84 corridor...the 7-lane mess a monument and testament to a Democrat bureaucracy out of control.

I love that picture.

A co-worker of my husband, who lives near here, used to have a bobcat who would come up and eat out of the cats’ dishes. The bobcat got so used to being around that when a storm came, and the thunder started, he would scratch on the door with a paw. They would open the door, he’d run in and dive under a bed or some other furniture, and when things quieted down, he’d go to the door and disappear again.

Thank you...have a fondness for these smaller cats...seem less predatory to people, than the mountain lions...that can take you in one bite...these guys seem more *manageable*..if that's the right term. Plus they are so rare and elusive.
