Riverside {california} firefighters were dispatched to the 4400 block of Linwood late Tuesday night, where they found a garage fully engulfed in flames. Turns out the resident of the home likes to buy a lot of gas when its cheap and store it in his garage where he decided to have a cigarette, fire officials said..
Three barrels of gasoline one 55-gallon and two 35-gallon were stored in the garage.
During the fire, there were two explosions, sending flames up as high as 80 feet, a Riverside Fire captain said.
The fire, which was confined to the unattached garage, was knocked down within 20 minutes, but not before causing $40,000 in damage.
The resident received second-degree burns to his right hand and is being treated at Arrow Regional Medical Center. A firefighter suffered heat blisters on the backs of both hands after standing too close to the fire during one explosion. He was treated at the scene.
The resident could face possible citations for the fire

Outlaw cigarettes! It's easier than outlawing stupidity. Because, of course, whenever something bad happens these days, we must outlaw something.
As a Vol fire Department heavy equipment operator (I operate the vehicles) this sounds kind of fun. a rip roaring Bon fire. No one hurt , no home destroyed.

There is a massive traffic jam on 95. Cars are stopped in their tracks. A man comes up to the window of my car and knocks. I opened the window and ask what’s up.
He told me that all of Obamas czars have been taken by terrorists and are being held for ransom. They said if we don’t give them 10 million dollars they are going to douse the czars in gasoline and set them on fire. And he was going around taking up a collction.
I asked him what was the average people were giving.
About a gallon each, he said.
I doubt the cigarette lit the gasoline.
I remember buying Propane back a while ago. I went to a place that fills up tanks. The guy there, with long hair, and the rest, was a TOTAL chain smoker. Lit up one after another...
...but the minute we walked out to the pump, he was Mother Teresa - that cigarette was LONG GONE. Smart guy.

Yes diesel in not volatile and has much longer shelf life.
Good to use biocide in it if you plan on storing > 1 year.
My guess is he was going to Mexico and filling up for a huge savings (but probably not worth the trip unless you buy a LOT).
