NBC ^ | 4/29/13

The Tim Tebow era is over in New York.

The Jets have released Tebow, the New York Post is reporting.

Tebow was widely expected to be on the way out for months, and the only surprise is that the Jets waited until now to do it. The arrival of rookie quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft may have been what it took for the Jets to decide that there was simply no room for Tebow on the roster anymor

I'm a big Tebow fan but a very good argument can be made that cutting him was purely a football decision.

The real problem was that the Jets signing him in the first place wasn't a purely football decision. It was clear from Day 1 that Tebow wasn't going to be given any chance or even respect by the coaching staff, and you could see that attitude in the other players who talked trash about Tebow despite the fact that they were incapable of doing their own jobs properly (yes, I'm looking at you, those people pretending to be an NFL offensive line).

Sanchez is on his way out too, of course, assuming the Jets have any desire to win games, but his replacement will fare little better without better coaching and protection up front. But don't feel too bad for Sanchez -- after Dennis Rodman's forays in diplomacy, the State Department is considering sending Sanchez to North Korea as an ambassador. The theory is that as soon as he sees lil' Kim, he'll overthrow him.

I’m surprised Tebow didn’t end up in Jacksonville. He has a lot of support down there and the hometown guy.

I’m not so willing to concede, as some here on this thread have, that Tebow “sucks” as a QB. He led the Broncos out of the cellar into the playoffs and actually won a game against an opponent (Steelers) most thought would win handily. In that partial season, Tebow threw for 12 TDs with only 6 INTs.

Is Tebow the second coming of Aaron Rogers or Tom Brady? Likely not... but to contend that he’s “awful,” or “sucks” is just as off-base. With some good coaching to tighten up the techniques, he’ll be a decent backup in the NFL or starter in the CFL.

You nailed it. NFL teams will sign and play Ted Bundy if he can help them win games. The only religion that matters in the NFL is winning.

Nonsense. If thats the case, why did the Jets even acquire him in the first place? You think the acquisition was a conspiracy between the Jets and the NFL to kill Tebow’s career by sitting him on the bench and then releasing him?

He’s just not that good of a quarterback. And, that combined with the fact that the Jets as an organization are inept pretty much killed Tebow’s career. At least as a football player.

They didn’t want to let him go, because they were stuck overpaying him even if they dropped him and hoped to get SOMETHING for him. They have been trying to trade Tebow for a while, but there are NO takers.

The Jets made a bad pickup on a mediocre quarterback...it happens all the time. Tebow can play 2nd or 3rd string for a while somewhere, but may be better served by switching to maybe TE.

About the only place where I can see Tebow impacting ticket sales in in Jacksonville. And unless the Jags are willing to sign him then I really think Tebow needs to be looking at what to do with his life outside of football.

This was NOT simply the cutting of a lesser player.

This was an active effort to diminish his light and his opportunity to shine in the NFL.

The Jets could have let him go, or traded him long ago, but wanted to limit his future opportunities and the attention focused on him.

<><><><><

His agent was able to start looking for a trade partner months ago, and the teams that expressed interest expressed interest IF he would consider changing positions from QB to something else on the field. Tebow declined.

That fact renders the notion that the Jets ‘held him back’ demonstrably false, and even more absurd is the notion that it’s because of his faith. They might have gotten something for him in a trade, they get absolutely nothing by simply releasing him.

He is nowhere near the first ‘can’t miss’ college qb to miss the mark entirely in the NFL.

Again, one can only trade a player if some other team is willing to enter into the agreement, and QB Tim Tebow was of no interest to other NFL teams.

That didn’t work out so well for Johnnie Elway, Peyton Manning, and the our first round loser Broncos did it?

Sorry, but I hope you’re not comparing Tim Tebow to Peyton Manning. One playoff win aside, there just is no comparison.

That is the $50,000 question; why did the Jets sign him? I think it's been established that Elway didn't like Tebow. When Denver traded him to the Jets there were some stories - I don't know how accurate - that Jacksonville offered a little better deal for him, but Elway sent him to New York anyway. At the time Sanchez had just signed a big contract and certainly hadn't had the disaster of a year he just had, so the Jets weren't looking for a new starter in that position. So why the heck did they take him unless it was Elway's plan to get Tebow out of football sooner than his average QB skills would have done on their own?

“a very good argument can be made that cutting him was purely a football decision.

Acquiring him and letting him rot on the bench in favor of the worst starting QB in the game wasn’t.”

Remember, this is the New York Jets. Just because it was a terrible, terrible football decision doesn’t mean that it wasn’t “purely a football decision.”

I will go one step further and say that I believe there was a conspiracy of the two GM’s to keep Tebow off the field and to diminish him as a starting QB anywhere.

<><><><<

Well, we are all free to believe whatever we choose, but you fail to specify why these 2 gms entered into the conspiracy.

Oh and why it was worth 2 draft picks and Tebow’s salary of, what was it?, well over a million bucks or so for the Jets to enter into this conspiracy (like what did they get out of it).

I agree with your assessment. I wish the best of luck to Tebow.. but the NFL cuts/picks people that excel at their chosen position. IMHO.

I like Tebow as a person. However, he is not a good quarterback. I keep hearing Canada, that is not an option. The Montreal Alouettes own his rights. The Als isn’t
going to bench Anthony Calvillo in favour. The 47% in the completion catergory isn’t going to get it done, either here or up there. The CFL is a pass happy league. Teams can ill afford having their drives stalling.

He isn’t Joe Montana, Steve Young or other famous Super Bowl winning QBs. If you want a fair comparison go back to the 1970s and look at Bobby Douglass. Big bruising left handed QB that can bowl people over with his legs. They have similar statistics and skill set. Granted Douglass threw alot of picks, Tebow coughed up the ball quite a bit.

wow, it must suck to get bumped for Geno Smith, lol.

imagine the poor guys who got cut by oakland to make way for JaMarcus Russell.

I’ve heard of hockey players being traded for equipment, but at least that’s useful.

‘Course not. But if the success of a TEAM is measured by their success in the playoffs, then TEAM Broncos were less successful last year than they were the year before. Even with the “one Super Bowl winning quarterback” Peyton Manning, who happens to be a very poor playoff qb.

if he can accept a backup or 3rd string role he will likely be signed by someone.

<><><><><

that’s apparently his issue, though, teams are interested in him if he would be willing to give up him pipedream about being an NFL QB.
