COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Danish museum officials say that an archaeological dig last year has revealed 365 items from the Viking era, including 60 rare coins.

Danish National Museum spokesman Jens Christian Moesgaard says the coins have a distinctive cross motif attributed to Norse King Harald Bluetooth, who is believed to have brought Christianity to Norway and Denmark.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Stokbro Larsen found the coins and other items with a metal detector in a field in northern Denmark.

Museum officials are involved. I bet he gets nothing. Someone will come along and say his finds are of historical or archaeological and belong in a museum. This is the aggrevating part of metal detecting, trying to gain permission in some areas and then keeping what you find.

No place in this article (that I could find) does the author offer dates for the “Viking era”, or the reign of King Harald Bluetooth. Pretty coins, however. They look to be in very good condition.

After a restart of my frozen computer, I looked it up. King Harald Bluetooth was the king of Denmark in the mid to late 900s. He is credited with uniting Denmark and overseeing its conversion to Christianity.

Someone will come along and say his finds are of historical or archaeological and belong in a museum.

When this happens in the UK, they have to give the finder and/or the land owner the full market value of the find. From what I've read, the finder and land owner normally split the money 50/50.

WOW! I would love to have found those coins.

About 20 years ago, on a trip to Denmark we were visiting a castle near Copenhagen. I am an avid arrowhead collector and always watch the ground when I walk outdoors. We were strolling around the grounds of the castle and I found a flint tool, very much like the ones I have found in south Texas.

i would think there has to be a fair finders fee else nobody would ever announce they found anything and simply sell it on the black market...

Yes I still have it....... someplace. That means it probably got mixed in with a box of south Texas arrowheads and flint tools. I still remember what it looked like and I will make an effort to find it.

I always wondered where all those lost jacket buttons ended up. Maybe someone will discover where all the orphan socks go—guess they’ll be harder to find since a metal detector is no good..........
