Maureen Dowd's marijuana-induced freak out
BBC News ^ | 4 June 2014 Last updated at 12:21 ET | By Anthony Zurcher

Maureen Dowd travelled to Colorado in January, ate a bit too much of a marijuana-laced chocolate bar and proceeded to have a Valley-of-the-Dolls-style meltdown in her hotel room.

Here's how she describes the experience in her Wednesday New York Times column:

"I felt a scary shudder go through my body and brain. I barely made it from the desk to the bed, where I lay curled up in a hallucinatory state for the next eight hours. I was thirsty but couldn't move to get water. Or even turn off the lights. I was panting and paranoid, sure that when the room-service waiter knocked and I didn't answer, he'd call the police and have me arrested for being unable to handle my candy."

"I strained to remember where I was or even what I was wearing, touching my green corduroy jeans and staring at the exposed-brick wall. As my paranoia deepened, I became convinced that I had died and no one was telling me."

Dowd pivots to talk about the dangers of pot overdoses and the "darker side of unleashing a drug as potent as marijuana on a horde of tourists of all ages and tolerance levels seeking a mellow buzz".

She says there are current efforts in the Colorado legislature to regulate the potency and consistency of marijuana products, as well as to ensure that packaging of pot-laced candy and cookies can't be accidentally eaten by children.

Dowd follows in the footsteps of fellow Times columnist David Brooks, who wrote in January about how he used to have fun smoking pot as a teenager, but he grew tired of hanging out with stoners. He then took a position against marijuana legalisation.

Brooks was mercilessly mocked for that column - and Dowd is getting a similar reception...

MD is right this time. And what about the states that are actively pushing pot? How can they justify that?

She should have watched the desert mescaline scene from “Beavis and Butthead Do America” to maintain her perspective. It might have been available on the hotel room TV.

Hmm, a glass of beer or wine doesn’t create those side effects. They relax you but one glass doesn’t induce paranoia.

I barely made it from the desk to the bed

Not the first time, I'd wager.

Hey, I wanna party with you girl. Nothing says fun like a paranoid, hallucinating NYT columnist curled up on the bed for 8 hours unable to distinguish reality.

I've often felt this way after reading one of Maureen's screeds. But I'm not a regular user of her columns.

I am perhaps the least experienced person of my years in the country on these issues, so please excuse my ignorance.

If pot of today is immensely more powerful than that of decades ago, wouldn’t it be more similar to hashish?

Did she cease to be able to distinguish reality or did she just become AWARE that she’s been unable to distinguish reality?

I’m sure the staffers at that artsy hotel with exposed brick interior walls are getting a big laugh passing around the security tape of Maureen Dowd wandering the halls, muttering and cackling, jumping into alcoves to hide from passing strangers. Well, that is if they know she’s supposed to be somebody or something.

She should have gone out and danced on the balcony.

It's almost like old times. It's been a while since I've been able to invoke that particular meme.

Next up: hugh, series, stuned beeber, not guilty, am I logged in, and I'm off to the shower....

I’ve found, over several decades of experience, that cannabis is actually a mirror and an amplifier, and that ugly people don’t want to look into the mirror once the amp is turned on. Just a thought, MoDo. Just a...reflection.

Hashish itself will be available in Washington State (and probably is in Colorado).

Gotta love all of these know-nothings who say today’s weed is so much better than it was in the “old days.” There is nothing out there now like the Acapulco Gold or Thai Stick of the ‘70s.

Again, excuse my ignorance. Since the active ingredient of pot and hashish is THC, they should be treated the same.

Isn’t that like saying beer and Everclear are the same thing?
