Need Ideas. First Time Alone for Thanksgiving in Many Years, Where to Go?
08.18.14 | chickensoup

Posted on 08/18/2014 5:16:06 PM PDT by Chickensoup

After years and years of hosting Thanksgiving for friends and family, I am on my own this year. My friends are either overseas or have moved out of the area, or have moved to live near their children, and my children are scattered. I have no family. So I am on my own.

I am looking for ideas for something to do on Thanksgiving, some place to go. I am considering Montreal, Asheville, etc. I live in the Northeast, and would have about 2K to spend. I am not fond of large cities, would love to do something fun, and something that would not be considered unusual when done alone. I also realize the issue of how difficult Thanksgiving travel is.

I have been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks. Does anyone one have any ideas? I could use some help here.

Thanks.

Your favorite soup.

If you are a member of a church, or just go to a church, many serve Thanksgiving diners. Many elderly people usually go there and is a good chance to meet somebody.

Naples, Florida is a wonderful place to visit, as is Anna Maria island. Do you like the ocean? It’s beautiful on the gulf coast, and there are many older people there. You wouldn’t feel at all out of place.

Montreal is a nice place to go, or Quebec in general.

It should cost a lot less than $2000.

just go to a church

That's what my simple mind was thinking. Volunteering could be just the trick.

It’s all good, but I would say St. Thomas, Frenchman’s Reef Resort. It is self contained, stunning views, fab beach - and there’s a ferry every 30 minutes that takes you to downtown Charlotte Amalia in 12 minutes….where there is shopping and site seeing and restaurants, etc, local flavor.

Combo of resort feel, and local feel, within minutes. And like I said, STUNNING views.

Aspen, Colorado and Lake Tahoe are gorgeous, and they’re full of wonderful restaurants, if you’re a foodie. If you stay on the bunny hill, you’ll be fairly safe, and it’s full of happy beginners and children. There are people of all ages, and being in a resort area is fun.

You might think about checking out opportunities for some kind of volunteer service. There was a time years ago, when I did a stint of manning a snacks and restroom service to travelers, in a church that was right beside a major highway. Talked with a lot of travelers, it was fun, and, for me, a fun, and memorable Thanksgiving.

Ditto on the rec above. If you’re looking for someplace warm...Naples, Florida is very nice and comfortable.

Look on tripadvisor for hotel and other recommendations for a place to stay. Not saying book thru tripadvisor, but I read the reviews (especially the bad ones) to see if what other people like/hate is something of concern to me.

I have to travel a lot in my job and safety and comfort are of big concerns. I do not want to worry about feeling safe.

Enjoy your time. I do like Canada...but hey, in November, go somewhere warmer. :)
