“15) Lee was a major Tolkien fan, reading The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy once a year for the majority of his life. He was the only member of the movie cast to have met Tolkien personally — apparently he ran into him randomly in a pub — and fanboyed out. Tolkien actually gave him his blessing to play Gandalf in any future Lord of the Rings movie.”

“17) The story has gone around a lot, but it bears repeating because it is incredible: During his death scene in Return of the King (only included in the Extended Edition to Lee’s disapproval), director Peter Jackson was describing to him what sound people getting stabbed in the back should make. Lee gravely responded that he had seen people being stabbed in the back, and knew exactly what sound they made.”

I would have loved to see him play Gandalf.

I remember him as the head of the gay motorcycle gang in "Serial".

He was "in love" with Tommy Smothers.

I read somewhere that half the people in Western Europe are descended from Charlemagne, many wives, mistresses, and most of his children lived into adulthood.

That was an awesome role. “My men are tough dudes, Holroyd!”

He knew the sound of people being stabbed in the back...

As an SOE member, he was more than likely the one stabbing.

In a behind-the-scenes interview on the “Lord of the Rings” set, Jackson revealed how he learned about Lee’s past during a particularly bloody scene.

“When Wormtongue rises up and comes up behind Saruman to stab him, of course it was my job as director to talk to Christopher Lee and to explain to him what I wanted, so I started to go into this long explanation about what sort of sound he should make when he got stabbed,” he explained.

Lee: “I seem to recall that I did say to Peter, ‘Have you any idea what kind of noise happens when somebody’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.”

Jackson: “He proceeded to talk about some sort of very clandestine part of World War II. He seemed to have expert knowledge of exactly the sort of noise that they make and so I just sort of didn’t push the subject any further.”

If I was Jackson I'd say: "I won't put in the movie, but what DOES it sound like?"

I'd be fascinated to hear it in Lee's voice.

Lee WAS great in that role.

His booming voice telling Holroyd: "If a man in this profession isn't earning his age in salary, he's a loser!"

Holroyd: "I guess that makes me a loser for five years."

I am sick to death of internet clowns describing their posts as “incredible”, “amazing” or “unbelievable”.

Lee described it in another Youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk4C2TclYZE

Essentially, the way that it occurred in the deleted scene (because Saruman’s death was not in the theatrical cut) was done as Christopher Lee said it would: a sudden gasp of sorts, disturbingly quiet for such a violent act.

I think it was Lee who said "That means you've been a loser for . . ."

Then Martin Mull says " . . . five years."

People who haven't seen this movie just are mystified when I tell them this is in my 10 ten movies ever.

Kate: "I can't believe I called the high priest a c#05sucker."

Thank you, LS, you are correct.

It's been so long since I saw Serial I got mixed up.

Martin Mull holds up his hand and says "five years".

Just for fun I found out how much 30K was in 1979 dollars, using the inflation calculator.

$94,000

So Christopher Lee was correct.

Mull was making an OK living by San Marino standards at the time, but he would have still been a "loser" per Lee.

Wow! I wonder what kind of ops Lee was into that he would “know” that by personal experience.

Oh, and LS, don't you find it funny how what was considered a blistering "satire" of CA life in 1980 has become the NORM in 2015?

I've got to see this movie again, just to see how many things actually came true.
