Oxford English Dictionary makes ‘Masshole’ official
Boston Globe ^ | 6/25/15 | Stephanie McFeeters

The Oxford English Dictionary added the word Masshole to its roster on Wednesday, formalizing a term well known to frustrated drivers throughout the Northeast.

A piece of “coarse slang” defined as “a term of contempt for a native or inhabitant of the state of Massachusetts,” Masshole was one of nearly 500 words added to the dictionary on Wednesday, along with twerk, sext, hyperlocal, freegan, fratty, and fo’ shizzle.

Usually in Beemers or some SUV with mindless bumper stickers, riding the centerline of the highway either going fast enough to vaporize metal on impact, or glacially slow and preventing forward travel due to their self assumed importance...

One of George Carlin's best lines: “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”

What about Maine-iac? I’ve got a few of those lead-foots in my family tree, but the Maine turnpike cops have been busier for the last 30 years or so catching them and collecting revenue.

An even 70 is good.
60 or slower is idiotic, 80 or faster is gross negligence.

I didn’t realize “Masshole” was a thing ... although around here, we use “Yank” in a similar manner.

This has nothing to do with traffic...the citizens of soviet Red Hampshire (home of the ‘Weed State Project’) drive just as bad as their ideological brethren from the south. (I live on a rural road in soviet Red Hampshire...speed limit ranges from 25 to 30...most citizens drive 50 or better. Police are too busy executing swat raids against innocent gardeners to bother with speeders.) The explanation in post #17 is spot on, although he forgot to mention that ‘Massholes’ are a bunch of arrogant pr*cks.

The traffic around Boston is brutal and the drivers are the worst in the world!
Just remember the primary "law of the jungle" in Boston, turn signals are a sign of weakness.

I moved out of Massachusetts for good last year and one of my happiest days was when I finally got those Massachusetts license plates off my car.

Suddenly people weren't giving the the finger all the time.

It's a nice feeling.

The Jeep dealers out here have been running a commercial the last couple of years featuring our actual official state song, and I keep wanting to suggest they amend it to “I love you, Catatonia, you’re the greatest state of aaaaaall...”

Sure you would, if you were driving on I-91 northbound for 50 miles with a Masshole license plate in front of you in the left passing lane at 55mph.

Just call us *carpetbaggers* and be done with it, K?

I got on the Massachusetts Turnpike and was immediately passed by some fool going over 100 mph and he was closely followed by another car at the same speed. Knowing my Massachusetts drivers, what was happening was the second car was playing cop by chasing the other guy because he was going to fast.

As someone who learned to drive in Boston, I think you may have misinterpreted the situation. I never encountered anyone "playing cop". The second driver was more likely following closely and perhaps blinking his lights at the first driver in order to get him to move to the right lane so he could be passed. There is no speed that is "fast enough" on I-90 (or the Autobahn). If you aren't in the process of overtaking another driver, you should be in the right-most lane.

Well yes, but, that’s exactly like a cop. One is always supposed to pull over for a cop. In MA, pretending you are one can accomplish the same affect. :-)

You “learned to drive in Boston”? Please. :-) Now perhaps if you said you learned how not to drive in Boston, that might be something I could support. :-)

I actually learned how to drive on my trip across country. I learned that some places police actually do enforce the traffic laws. For instance, in CA you are required to stop as soon as a pedestrian steps off the curb. Such was unheard of at the time in MA. Also, CA had these 4 way intersections with stop signs at each crossing. Right of way law prevailed which said the first to stop is the first to go. Never a problem. It worked very well and people got thru quickly and easily. This of course would create chaos in MA. Talk about road rage.
