Trump vs. 'Conman' Reagan
American Thinker ^ | April 22, 2016 | Daniel John Sobieski

When Donald Trump’s political credentials as a Republican and/or conservative are challenged, he likes to remind people that Ronald Reagan was a Democrat once and managed to evolve over time. Except that Reagan’s conversion was real and he had two terms as governor of California to prove his bona fides before he ran for president as a conservative Republican. As Reagan campaign manager Stu Spencer and speechwriter Ken Khachiagin note in a Real Clear Politics piece:

Yes, Ronald Reagan migrated from being a liberal Democrat to the gold standard for conservative Republicans. But Reagan’s views evolved over four decades’ worth of life experience, a philosophical journey that took place gradually. His conservative credentials didn’t emanate overnight to match the political season. His was a slow and thoughtful transformation from the 1930s to the 1960s. Trump’s appears to be a midnight conversion just in time for the Iowa caucuses.

The article has a 1991 quote from Trump. Alright, 1991 was a long time ago. Trump may have changed, but one would expect some evidence of that change. Anyway, Trump (91) said:

“having cut the high income tax rates to 25 percent, as an example, people don’t have the incentive any more to invest.”

Does that make any economic sense? When you cut tax rates, people are less likely to look for tax shelters and more likely to invest productively.

The economy boomed under Reagan and tax revenues almost doubled. It would be nice if Trump admitted he was wrong, but learned from Reagan’s successes. That would seem credible to me.

The column is appreciated.

Research has shown this kind of writing strengthens Trump support.

Keep up the good work.

While the sentiment of His using broken people is true, some of those bible stories the wrong point is taken. The point of Job was not that he went broke, Job trusted God no matter what happened to him. The take on David is also off, God used him because he was the most righteous man in Israel. Sadly he wasn’t considered aman yet. Noah also was used because of his righteousness, the drunkenness came later.

Let’s put a finer point on it, the anti-Trump movement is, to a large extent, the pro-life movement attempting to impose a purity test on any potential Republican candidate.

Reagan was a practicing Conservative theoretician.

Trump? He's more of a temporarily pretending/acting Conservative wannabe.

Trump and Reagan are two different people.

However, Trump is the only pro-American candidate from either party since Reagan left the stage.

Churchill and Reagan have political track records. They can be assessed based on their political accomplishments.

Trump, to date, has the political accomplishment only of being the presumptive GOP nominee.

That is to say that, in the political sphere, Trump has accomplished nothing, and to compare him to anyone with with actual accomplishments disparages those to whom he is compared.

Yes, in the political spectrum, Trump has no political accomplishments. However, unlike godking Cruz, both Reagan and Trump have private sector experience.

You are really lying about that. When Reagan was elected, the abortion bill was already on his desk. He was told to sign it and he did. Abortion wasn’t on the radar like it has been now for 40 years. Reagan regretted signing that and wrote extensively about the issue. What you wrote about it is deceptive.

He was governor for six months, with ample time to review the legislation, and consider its consequences. He was TOLD? Is that leadership? It's nice that he regretted it after he later changed his views, as Trump has. Meanwhile the damage was done.

From a total of 518 legal abortions in California in 1967, the number of abortions soared to an annual average of 100,000 in the remaining years of Reagan’s two terms — more abortions than in any U.S. state prior to the advent of Roe v. Wade.

Bt I respect that Reagan changed his views, as has Donald J. Trump.

Reagan was a dem whose ideology shifted inexorably rightward until 1962 when he joined the GOP. Contrast that with Trump, who has changed party affiliations and policy stances with the political winds of the day.

Donald Trump isn’t worthy of a side-by-side comparison with Ronald Reagan.

“He was a Liberal New Deal Democrat till he was 51 years old and that never really left him.”

Bullshit. And you KNOW it’s bullshit.

No it’s not. Most of his life Reagan was a Liberal New Deal Democrat. His admiration for FDR never left him.

Did he evolve on some things, yes he did. But does that mean that the foundation he had as a liberal ever totally leave him. Maybe not.

The point I am trying to make is that after a time we get the Myth rather than the real person. Much the same is with JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr..

Now I came across the following about month or so ago and after reading and then doing some research my self I have to agree Reagan was not what we think we remember.

Make your own decision : https://www.lewrockwell.com/2016/03/jack-kerwick/hey-reagan-conservatives/

Reagan was a great President but the reality is that he wasn’t that Conservative. I suspect the only real Conservative to run for President may have been Barry Goldwater.

The Reagan record on a number of things is not what was reality. For instance, Reagan raised taxes 11 times as President. Lots of other examples.
