Bolivia’s President Evo Morales said that the legal team representing his country in the maritime trial at the International Court in The Hague is prepared to “demolish” Chile’s arguments.
In mid-February, Morales met in the Netherlands with his team of international lawyers due to the need to prepare a response to the impending Chilean counter-suit.
On Wednesday, at a press conference, the president said that “The meeting was to review details for our legal defense based upon historical, legal, and technical issues and, above all, a proposal to demolish the Chilean counter-suit.”
Legal arguments will be presented by attorney Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé to the International Court of Justice on March 21.
In addition, Morales indicated that his legal team has been “united and dedicated to a commitment to search for truth and justice.”
He added that, “Bolivia does not want to solve outstanding problems with Chile via a confrontation, but through the relevant courts in order to seek a peaceful solution.”
According to the digital portal El Deber, the Chilean media has not still not addressed the statements made by the Bolivian president.
It is important to remember that by July 2016, Chile had submitted to the International Court of Justice its response to the Bolivian demand. In September attorneys for the two countries requested a second round of legal arguments, but in writing.
The government of Morales introduced a maritime lawsuit in April 2013 against Chile, with the aim of using the ICJ to obligate the Chilean authorities to negotiate and resolve issues related to Bolivia’s 1879 loss of its coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
If Bolivia and Chile fight, Chile wins.

Rubbish. Chile has held the territory longer than Bolivia held it. Using the same reasoning Bolivia is using, Spain could claim it’s all Spanish territory, or the Inca empire. (Spain’s claim to Gibraltar is a similar bogus claim)
In the 1960 the Bolivian army attempted to take out the administration and take over the country. They got their butts kicked by the national police.
When I was there and Bolivia and the US had good relations in the 1990s, the national police had the latest US gear, including M-4s, very professional new uniforms.
I ran into some of their army guys at a checkpoint and they only had a few old rusted out WW-II mini 14s ragged uniforms and sandals instead of boots.

Bolivia signed away their rights to the territory in 1904 as part of the “Treaty of Peace and Friendship”. No real issue here.
But it’s pretty much the same as Mexico’s claim to the U.S. southwest. They had it for 27 years and we’ve had it for 169. But it’s really theirs.

Sounds like Bolivia already won the first round in The Hague. This is round 2 .
Why would anybody submit to the ICJ over a matter involving their own sovereign territory?
They are both in court so they both are subject to it.
And as to actual control, it was much less than that in many places. In the case of Texas, it was a mere 4-years.
Mexico gained control from Spain in 1821, but the Mexicans couldn't handle the Comanche and had to (like Spain had agreed to before) have Stephen Austin lead Americans there in 1825 to settle the area.
Chile has never lost a war. They have a small but very professional military. Chile has had a fair amount of German influence in it’s military in the past.
Only country left in Latin America where the majority still speaks an Indian language. Nothing to see here folks, move along.
