I wonder if that is a “former” German military car in the picture?

My dad was there. He told me they ran out of the barracks with their mattresses on their backs.

Reminds me of an old WWII cartoon by Bill Mauldin.

Fat officer and driver standing outside his jeep admiring a mountain scenic spot:

"Beautiful view. Is there one for the enlisted men? "

When going to watch a volcanic eruption with the extremely abrasive volcanic ash falling, I always try to go in someone else vehicle. Or I stay at home and drink Dos Equis (IPA really)

I’m guessing you are referring to the review view of the vehicle in the center as the “former German car.” It is a US Army Dodge WC-56 or WC-57, series 4x4, 3/4 ton, Command Car. See this Wikipedia article and photographs:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_WC_series

The left hand vehicle is, obviously, the good old Army jeep.

Dad had that book and I picked it up about a year ago, always loved it. Mauldin drew the Brooklyn Dodgers “Bum” on a lot of their programs.

My Dad was a good artist and at Pearl Harbor that Dec day.
In the folks 1st home after the war in 1945 he painted a mural size of a Mauldin page on the cellar wall, 6 feet high at the bottom of the stairs.
It read, Don’t startle him Joe, its almost full”.

We had the book Wille and Joe it was taken from around the house and none of us know what happened to it ? It would be a collectors item these days.

Just as those soldiers are doing, I once stood in awe and observed a volcano in Guatemala as it erupted. It was all fun and games until I realized what goes up must come down when the hot lava rocks crashed down beside me, and added to the lava rock rubble pile I was standing on which was just like the lava rock rubble pile these soldiers are standing on.

Believe me, the lava rock rubble pile these soldiers are standing on is about to get much larger.
