The corporate takeover of 10 Sonic drive-ins around the Columbus, Ohio, area got off to a bumpy start after workers at three of the hamburger chain's restaurants walked off the job en masse and caused a local stir with their parting sentiments.

"Due to terrible management the whole store has quit," reads an expletive-laced goodbye note taped to a window of the Sonic restaurant in Circleville, where another handwritten sign read, "Thank you, next,"...

I’ve read several accounts of Sonic episode. No one explains why corporate came in to take over these privately owned operations. It might be curious to ask what happened. But once they came in...the district managers and individual operation managers were all laid off and new people brought in. Whatever the objective was in this process....it went negative real quick.

I know twenty years ago....Sonic operations were a fairly successful operation (You didn’t go broke, but you didn’t clear vast sums of money). Would be interesting to know if they’ve lost some of their charm.

from the article

“If an employee’s total wages in a pay period including tips falls below the total Ohio minimum wage of $8.55 an hour, the employer must make up the difference,” emailed a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Commerce.

Publically traded Sonic is now privately owned by the same folks who own Arbys and Buffalo Wild Wings - Inspire Brands, a venture of Atlanta-based Roark Capital Group. It makes sense they would close aged building/poor performers that publically-held Sonic kept open to bolster their asking price.

Soon they will have no wage because these antics are making companies look towards machines to take over their jobs.

These people demanding higher wages for an unskilled jobs better be careful with what they wish for.

Im all for a fair wage, but quitting your job based on a rumor is foolish.

Of course I am basing this on what’s being reported in this article and lately you can’t trust just one source for an honest answer.

Back in the 1990s, Sonic had a great performance on stock. Instead of a dividend, they had continual stock splits (like every two years....a 3 for 2 deal). Then you look around 2007...the bottom fell out of the stock. No splits, no dividends.

If you had a small town of 2,000 people and no real competition, then a franchise made sense, and probably had a good return on investment. In the towns of 100,000 or more....they had too much competition.

I Always have liked Sonic. They are quick and efficient and make a good hamburger. I have no idea what the girls are paid. Without exception they have been extremely pleasant and courteous. They are mostly high school kids. They always get a nice tip.

hey 'sancho' read the article...

All Sonic workers in the state earn at least the non-tipped minimum wage, with tips given to car hops at its restaurants coming in addition to that, said the spokesperson, who blamed a disgruntled manager who lost their job in the transition for spreading rumors.

I’ll tip for full table service and deliveries. I do not tip for counter service, and I do not tip food runners.

I used to go to Sonic every couple months or so; now that I know they are expecting tips, I will not.

One of the many reasons I don’t go to starbucks is the tipping.

When you have to pay upwards of five bucks for a cup of coffee, I always figured the tip was included.

But then it’s been many years since I set foot in a Starsucks, so what do I know.

At the local McDonald’s the employees don’t even deserve the standard minimum wage. They literally get my order wrong one out of five times.

I used to tip the carhops at Sonic a flat $1.00, not a percentage as I do for table service. Now I have quit going to Sonic at all, after they screwed up my order one too many times.

Well seeing how the staff reacted to a ridiculous and idiotic rumor I think I know a reason why. Awful employees turned the locations to crap and Corp had to take over

“it started with a rumour that wages would be cut to half the minimum wage.... “

And, none of the brain surgeons working at these restaurants thought it might be wise to wait and see what was actually giong to happen.

That’s why they’ll always be performing brain surgery at fast food restaurants.

In Columbus, Ohio there are 1000’s of entry level job openings. There are many warehouses close to this Sonic, begging for workers.
