Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) researchers have shown that a significant number of patients with benign prostate enlargement (BPE) may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which may be the reason for their night awakenings and urination.
This study compared men between the ages of 55 and 75 years-old, who were randomly sampled from primary care clinics, diagnosed with BPE and reported nocturia at least once nightly. The comparison control group had no BPE and one or no nocturia episodes per night.
According to the new study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, the BGU researchers found that more than half (57.8 percent) of patients with enlarged prostates may in fact have the sleep disorder, and that the awakenings that patients ascribed to their need to urinate at night may be actually caused by their sleep disorders.
Waking during the night to void, known as "nocturia" is a common BPE symptom. OSA is a sleep disorder characterized by snoring, witnessed apneas, awakenings and day sleepiness.
"If nocturia severity in BPE patients is actually a pre-existing sleep disorder, this can now be treated and help improve patients' quality of life," explains Dr. Howard Tandeter, a researcher in BGU's Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences. He recommends that physicians following patients with BPE who report frequent awakeningsfrom sleep to urinate should suspect OSA as a possible cause and treat accordingly.
"Even among those patients with well-defined medical reasons for nocturia, sleep disorders may still be found as the source of most awakenings from sleep. Therefore, the diagnosis of a sleep disorder should be seriously considered whenever a patient reports frequent awakenings from sleepto urinate since the problem is treatable," explains Tandeter.

It would seem prudent to be tested and potentially use a CPAP.
The prostate tide rolls on.
We need a Prostate Forum.
I have to sleep on my side regardless but I found that my tongue can’t fall back into my throat if I tilt my head back so I trained myself to sleep that way. Reduced my sleep apnea a lot.
My kids will be encouraging me to let some one I dont know violate my anus with a probe. Within a week, I guarantee.
I saw they have made a product meant to hold the tongue in place while you sleep. The bad news is that it looks like a pacifier.
OSA can be the source of a ton of things. My sleep doc called it Pseudo-RBD. Basically if you can do it while awake, you can do it while asleep when you have OSA.
I’ve seen those but I think I’ve got a handle on it.
I wouldn’t care what it looks like though.
I was talking to a guy about his C-PAP machine, he was showing to a mutual friend and me. I asked him if that mask didn’t scare his wife in the middle of the night. He replied “It would scare her more to wake up and find me dead.”
lol Couldn’t argue with that.
What does apnea have to do with a full bladder and a constricted prostate?
When you gotta go, you gotta go - seems like having to go would tend to be a wake-up call...
Of course, eating a whole food, plant-based diet, can treat both prostate issues and sleep problems. No need to look further. Of course, the medical industry will push pills because there is no money in simply telling people to eat a whole foods, plant-based diet.
As I’ve aged. I still fully empty my bladder around 6:00AM each morning and have a complete bowel movement around 7:00AM. Now, if I could just get out of bed before 8:00AM, everything would be great!
Absolutely nothing. I have horrible sleep apnea (and use a CPAP) and at 57 years old I don't have to wake up to pee.
One has nothing to do with the other.
True. I have horrible sleep apnea. If I sleep w/o my CPAP I snore, stop breathing and wake up more than 60 times an hour (sleep study showed that.)
I only finally went for asleep study some five years ago after ending up in the hospital with a mild heart attack and a racing heartbeat. Cardiologist examined my throat and told me to go get a sleep test before I ended up dead.
Best advice I ever got. I still have trouble now and then sleeping however the overwhelming majority of the time now I sleep well, get good restful deep sleep and am far more alert than I've been in decades. CPAP works.
I have severe sleep apnea and have successfully used a CPAP for more than 20 years. Only recently have I been waking in the night to urinate partly due to an enlarged prostate and partly due to my keeping very hydrated. Before my sleep apnea was being treated, I would wake up not due to an urge to urinate, but due to gasping for breath.
I am very glad you had the diagnosed.
I have a family member who I need to talk with about doing the same. Its not so much deep snoring, but what I understand is her difficulty exhaling.
Prior to getting a CPAP I would wake up every 2 hours with an urgent need to pee. After getting the CPAP I sleep through the night with no problems.
I have no prostate issues and other than the CPAP didn’t make any other changes.
A trick I picked up from a friend for “mouth breathing” is to put your tongue up against the roof of your mouth and create a vacuum seal. Basically touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your upper front teeth, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and “suck” the air out.
Fascinating. What a wonderful fix!
as you know, some prostate treatments can be troublesome...
bump for later
