On This Day in NYC History, December 3: Jonas Bronck Bought the Bronx in 1641 [I couldn't wait, and it's from 2013]

According to the Bronx Historical Society, the first settlement is in modern day "Mott Haven" by East 138th street. The area was initially a part of Westchester county. The annex onto NYC was spurred by regular railroad service between the Bronx and Manhattan that started in 1841. Jonas Bronck's original purchase was all farmland, and the area stayed that way until it became a part of New York City in 1895. People would always say they were "going to the Broncks'," so the name stuck.

The purchase price was two guns, two kettles, two adzes, two shirts a barrel of cider, and six-coins. His house stood where the N.Y. Central 138th St. station is now, just north of Harlem River. Dr. Marcellus Bronk, of 225 W. 106th St. is a descendant. He has a distant relative, John Bronk, living in Queens a second cousin William R. Bronk who lives in Pelham. There are no Bronks in the Bronx. Jonas Son Pieter moved upstate and became the first brewer in Albana. There are two Bronks in New Rochelle & Mineola and a good many around Albany. Leonard Bronk Lampman, a retired lawyer living at the Yale Club, is a descendant of Pieter Bronk. |
