BISHOPS' PRESIDENT BLASTS 'SOUTH PARK' EPISODE LAMPOONING MARY (Disgusting!)

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."

In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.

The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.

When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.

Ah, you might want to reread that post you responded to. You totally missed the point.

Suit yourself. You're the one who asked. I assumed you wanted an answer.

"I have seen the show, and it was far more a rip on AA than anything else."

The episode was an attack on the belief that addiction and/or over-indulgence is an incurable disease which can only be conquered through miraculous intervention rather than self-discipline.

While the episode wasn't very "Christian", the message of personal responsibility certainly is conservative.

Still with it, eh? This response was righteous indignation as well.

Let me rephrase that: you are just very confused. No need to qualify it, the broader scope of that confusion is evident in your post. On the bright side, chronic confusion is rarely fatal, and I've heard a rumor that the Republicans are creating an entitlement for the confused.

Once again, the point of the whole thing was to poke fun at the "crying Mary, Mary in a tortilla, Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich, Mary on a bathroom window, etc." crowd. It WAS NOT poking fun at the Virgin Mary.

"The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" "

Matt and Trey will be so glad to hear this!!! On the other hand, I doubt they care at all who the President of the US Bishops Conference is. They don't care who ANYONE is. That's what you have to understand about South Park. If you do, then you can laugh and laugh and laugh. Because it's sooooo funny.....and you don't care.

"There would never be an episode on South Park that would show the muslims' allah engaged in some perversion." Not only would there be, there already HAS been. You obviously don't watch "South Park", which is the best solution for those who dislike the show."""

Does South Park ever make fun of the Holocaust or any other important Jewish subject? I suspect not -- as a rule, Hollywood blasphemes Christianity but not Judaism -- but maybe this isn't the case with South Park, maybe that show is an equal-opportunity blasphemer. Anyone know?

I personaly have been deeply offended by certain South Park episodes where they went that extra mile to offend.

I turned it off. But I check it out every once in a while because I know that other times I laughed so hard I thought I was going to plotz.

Take it for what its worth. these people who write it are very clever and sometimes prove to be very sick

I think it definitely has a place for 'Right' minded folks but like I already said, it is not for the easily offended.

I guess our Troops are a bunch of imbeciles. I have seen more than a handful of our military equipment (tanks, planes, etc...) with South Park sayings painted on them.

I agree. I wonder how many of them would watch it with their children or grandchildren in the room?

Why does everything I watch need to be watched with my children or grandchildren? This is a program for ADULTS.

Actually, the show was making fun of idiots who flock to see images of Mary or the "weeping Mary" statue, not Christians or Catholics in general. """

Does the show ever make fun of Holocaust museums or Holocaust remembrances? I'll be not.

If more Catholics stood up to be heard, these South Park creators WOULD care, because they'd be faced with massive protests and boycotts, as somebody said on another post.

Only people dumb enough to have their children up at 10:00 p.m.

Why am I not surprised to see YOU on this thread, spreading around your moral indignation.
