Trayvon Martin shooting: Shame on the NRA and its newest poster child, George Zimmerman (Blech!)
The New York Daily News ^ | April 13, 2012 | Mike Lupica

Posted on 04/13/2012 5:44:37 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Officially the National Rifle Association convention is not supposed to begin until Friday, at the America’s Center of St. Louis, Mo. But really the NRA convention began Thursday in a courtroom in Sanford, Fla., its keynote speech delivered by a man in a jail jumpsuit who barely said a word.

His name is George Zimmerman and he is not just the face of the NRA in this country, he is the face of gun laws built on the fears and paranoia of the gun lovers in the NRA, the ones who have made a mockery of the Second Amendment. His name is George Zimmerman and in all the big ways he is the darling of the NRA, which wants the whole country to shoot first and ask questions later.

And if an unarmed 17-year old kid ends up dead in the street, well, that’s just the cost of doing business.

Zimmerman: Another guy in America who should never have been allowed to carry a gun but sure had one the night he shot Trayvon Martin. A guy who finally got arrested for murder because a brave Florida prosecutor decided George Zimmerman wasn’t allowed to hide behind one of those Stand Your Ground laws that have become a better license to kill than James Bond ever had.

Mayor Bloomberg was talking about laws like that again yesterday, one day after delivering a speech in Washington that was the biggest and best speech any major American politician has ever given on the subject of guns.

“These laws are vigilantism masquerading as self-defense, and getting 25 states to pass them is one of the best con jobs the NRA’s leaders have ever pulled off,” Bloomberg said. “They don’t give a damn whether innocent people are shot and killed. And they don’t give a damn about the integrity of the American justice system. They want to create a nation where disputes are settled by guns instead of gavels, and where suspects are shot by civilians instead of arrested by police. These laws destabilize our justice system, they degrade our society, and they destroy innocent lives. We can’t be silent — and we can’t let them stand.”

And here is what Bloomberg said on Wednesday at the National Press Club, on the day when he and national African-American leaders announced a new partnership to reform or repeal shoot-first laws now on the books in Florida and 24 other states:

“The NRA’s leaders weren’t interested in public safety. They were interested in promoting a culture where people take the law into their own hands and face no consequences for it. Let’s call that by its real name: vigilantism.”

Are they using a photo of Trayvon as an infant yet?

“he didn’t want anyone to know he was armed.”

If he carries a gun he is required by law to carry it concealed, but as well as knowing exactly what happend, you are also a mind reader.

It is even possible that he forgot he even had the gun on him. I carry a small gun similar to the Kel-Tec he had and occasionally I forget to leave it in the car when I go into the post office.

Florida is not a traditional open carry state.
Open Carry is lawful while engaged in, or going directly to and from, lawful Target Shooting, Hunting, Fishing, and Camping expeditions. FL Statutes 790.25(3)(h), (j), and (k)

I looked at the link to try to find comments. I did not see any. Has anyone else seen comments there? Does the New York Daily News allow them?

Lupica is a coward, he doesn't allow any comments to his articles.

He took a gun on neighborhood watch.

You need to read VERY VERY carefully my next sentence, you and all the panty-wetters on FR who are caterwauling about this:

Even though Neighborhood Watch is a damned Federal program, they have NO AUTHORITY to tell me what I can do in my own neighborhood.

That point aside, Zimmerman had EVERY RIGHT to carry a gun. Anywhere he wants. That is the core of the 2nd Amendment. Moreover, he got the state's concealed carry license.

Is this a freaking liberal debating society? Or am I actually having to defend the 2nd Amendment on FR!?

"a white hispanic cannot shoot a black punk thug in self defense and expect justice. "

What a bummer.

Even those old images of a baby face are completely at odds with the more recent pictures of that gold toothed, tattoo covered, self described 'No Limit Ni**a' Gangsta-Wanna-be, black punk thug.

All persons of authority have something visual. Cops and soldiers have uniforms. To the kid(who appears to be new to the neighborhood) it appears he was being challenged buy a rube. A ball bat in Zimmerman’s hand likely would have mitigated the attack.

Nope, I’ll bet Zimmerman himself would tell you if he knew how this would turn out he would have done some things differently. Zimmerman wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer and he didn’t manage his risk. $hit happens.

Why are you intentionally being contentious on this point?

HE WAS NOT ON NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH DUTY THAT NIGHT.

HE HAS A RIGHT TO CARRY CONCEALED ESPECIALLY IN HIS OWN NEIGHBORHOOD

Are you stupid or something?

Are you one of his neighbors? How do you know how “sharp” he is? He was a mortgage and insurance analyst and underwriter. Not exactly ditch-digging or burger-flipping.

This says a great deal about how sure he is of his ability to defend his writing.

If someone does not allow comments, they are not worth reading.

Overtly challenging the kid while carrying concealed is a big NO NO. That’s where he went wrong in my opinion.

Did he carry while on official neighborhood watch duty?

From his 911 log it looks as if he was frustrated, and maybe fed-up with his town’s law enforcement(or lack thereof).

There is some culpability here.

F’n MSM turned it into zoo. It’s too late for an equitable outcome now.

The left is busy piling on the public convictions (not charges, convictions) against this man.

This is the latest.

And this one is a pure thoughtcrime.

Of which he is guilty, by definition, without any chance of appeal or rebuttal, by definition.

This is pure Stalinism in action. This is 1984 as non-fiction.

This is not as bad as it gets, but it's on a fast track getting there.

It’s like a Jew killing a nazi party member, and expecting a fair trial.
Correct. And you have an excellent tagline.

Do you realize that call on the night of Martin's death was not a 911 call, but rather the non-emergency number? And he called about 45 times in eight years or something along those lines. That's like once every 3 months. He's the captain of the federally organized neighborhood watch. That doesn't sound excessive, especially since there'd been eight break-ins recently. Other than what MSNBC has told you, do you know anything about this case?

“A ball bat in Zimmerman’s hand likely would have mitigated the attack.”

“Overtly challenging the kid”

You can’t have it both ways. IMO if some one is carrying a ball bat that is overtly challenging. If they have a concealed weapon it is not an overt threat. Again you have no idea who challenged who. Hopefully we will find the truth in the court room.
