Talk Radio Derailing? Poor Decisions, Lack Of Focus Affecting Quality
The Radio Equalizer ^ | May 31, 2005 | Brian

Is talk radio becoming derailed by peculiar programming moves, unfocused hosts and some who just don't belong on the air?

Recently, the Radio Equalizer has begun to receive feedback from industry managers, air talent and listeners, alerting me to disturbing developments in the medium.

At a time when blogs, XM, SIRIUS and podcasting threaten AM radio from every angle, one would expect a sharp focus on what works, an effective plan of attack.

Instead, the decisions become more baffling every day, with no sign of change coming soon.

Funny how the first keyword is "ErrorAmerika" - must be an alphabetic fluke.

You mean Michael Savage? He fits this bill. And, sad to say, Bill Bennett is on the cusp of this. He just doesn't know how to handle callers efficiently.

'Talk' radio would be nice. What I hear, on those rare occasions when I bother to turn it on, is 'ad' radio.

When you factor in the time used for bumper music and top of the hour breaks, most talk shows have 30 minutes or less of "talk" each hour.

No way I'm wasting my time listening to that.

Listeners still have the same demands, but when talk radio is no longer delivering them, they're finding other places to go.

I've been dusting off my classical music collection.

KRLA has the best lineup for conservative talk in my book:

Laura Ingrahm - fresh, witty, and young. Very principled and her show starts the day off right.

Dennis Prager - AWESOME macro-analysis, great personality, and varies programs for intriguing topics.

Mike Medved - probably the best conservative spokesman out there. Varies his topics.

(Then I switch off to KNEW for Mike Savage, but KRLA has the awesome Hugh Hewitt).

Mike Savage - what a nightcap! ;-)

I've never listened to him, but I have listened to Boortz since about 1972. I started late with Rush, about 1996. I can see the copycats a mile away. I can also see the genuine article which, as always, has its critics and its praisers.

What we really need to worry about is not how good or bad any of these pundits are but whether or not their medium is going to be shut down by the anti-free speech McCain/Feingold crowd. The laws are on the books friend. We should be wary of the tampering that is about to come.

I don't have the patience for that, so I've taken to checking out books on tape from the library and listening to them as I drive.

I was a Rush listener for years. I just stopped listening to talk radio altogether except for Mark Levin. Sometimes I'll listen to Kevin McCullough too.
